We understand that chronic illness doesn\u2019t just impact your child \u2013 it affects the whole family. That\u2019s why our team of professionals provides personal counseling, psychological support and coordination of treatment to help lessen the impact of chronic disease on your family.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Blood Disorder?<\/h2>\n<p>A blood disorder is a condition affecting red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. Two common types of blood disorders are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anemia \u2013 Occurs when there is not enough red blood cells or when red blood cells do not function properly<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding disorders \u2013 Group of conditions that result when the blood cannot clot properly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is Blood Cancer?<\/h2>\n<p>Blood cancers start in the blood, bone marrow or lymphatic system. They interfere with your body\u2019s ability to fight infection.<\/p>\n<p>Three common types of blood cancer are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leukemia \u2013 Starts in your blood and bone marrow<\/li>\n<li>Lymphoma \u2013 Starts in your lymphatic system<\/li>\n<li>Myeloma \u2013 Starts in your white blood cells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Services We Provide<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Chemotherapy:\u00a0Children receive chemotherapy both in the outpatient department and on the inpatient pediatric floor.\u00a0Treatments are given by chemotherapy-certified nursing personnel and are overseen by a board-certified pediatric oncologist.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"\">Radiation therapy<\/a>: Children may receive radiation therapy provided by radiation oncologists at Memorial Regional Cancer Center. Some children may travel to Indiana University in Indianapolis or Bloomington for special cancer radiation needs.<\/li>\n<li>Sickle cell therapy:\u00a0We monitor children and adolescents with all forms of sickle cell disease, thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies.<\/li>\n<li>Blood transfusions:\u00a0Cancer patients and patients with transfusion-dependent anemias receive transfusions of packed erythrocytes, platelets and other blood products.<\/li>\n<li>Specialized hematology testing:\u00a0We provide evaluation and management of patients with anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and other blood disorders.<\/li>\n<li>Hemophilia\u00a0management:\u00a0Working in conjunction with the Indiana Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center (IHTC), we care for children and adolescents with all types of bleeding disorders and thrombophila.<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition counseling:\u00a0Nutritional complications are common in children with cancer or severe blood disorders.
