Lose 10 pounds in 60 minutes

I am pretty sure I lost 10 pounds in 60 minutes last weekend! I feel lighter and brighter and definitely less bogged down. I think I will do it again this weekend! And YOU can do it too!

How did I do it? What was my trick? It was not a crash diet or exercise marathon.

I did the double trash bag tango through my closet! One bag was for trash, clothing and other items too far gone to even be donated and the other was for  items to donate. It was amazing how quickly both bags were overflowing. I immediately put the trash in my bin and the other in my vehicle and drove it to the donation center. With a clean closet and a clear head, I felt organized, energized and floated through the rest of my weekend feeling 10 pounds lighter! And it only took an hour!

A lot of information is out there these days about decluttering. On one extreme we have a television show called “Hoarders” about people who literally become buried in their inability to get rid of stuff. And now we have a show on Netflix called “Tidying Up” with Marie Kondo, with her KonMari method of decluttering our homes and our lives. Marie encourages us to throw out items that no longer “spark joy”.

In my decluttering, I asked myself three questions about each item:

  1. Do I need this?
  2. Do I use this?
  3. Do I love this?

I went with my initial gut feeling with each item. No paralysis by analysis. My goal was not to rush, but to get some momentum and move somewhat quickly.

Studies have shown that decluttering our homes can change our lives in many positive ways, including:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety
  2. Saves time
  3. Cleanses your mind
  4. Strengthens relationships in the home
  5. Energizes your mind, body and spirit

While the weather is still…. Winter… dig into a closet, a dresser, a kitchen cabinet, and get rid of some stuff. If you feel unmotivated, start small. Open a junk drawer and empty the contents onto the floor and make each item justify itself getting returned to the drawer.

Remember, your trash may be someone else’s treasure. And what you receive in return is the feelings of power, clarity and joy. Try it, and let me know what you think by emailing me!
