Beacon Best Medicine

The Beacon Health & Fitness Best Medicine program is divided into several different diagnoses. The individual programs conduct specialized fitness classes designed to help improve all aspects of the participant.

ARTHRITIS FITNESS, Joint Venture
This is for anyone who has rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and joint replacement or joint pain. The exercises will help relieve your pain and improve your body movement, along with enhancing your balance and overall strength through activities in a warm-water therapy pool.

AUTISM FITNESS, Piece of the Puzzle
Focus on improving the health and fitness of individuals with Autism. Autism Fitness will focus on helping to improve five separate disciplines – fundamental skills, game and sport related skills, making judgement, connecting with others, and empathy. Participants are assessed prior to the start of the session, as well as throughout the class to track progress. Exercise has been proved to improve health and fitness, motor skills, and some behaviors in individuals with Autism.

CANCER FITNESS, Restorative Fitness at Memorial Regional Cancer Center
Exercise, during and after cancer treatment, is proven to enhance recovery. Less pain, more energy, strength and endurance are just some of the health benefits you can experience with Restorative Fitness.

CONTINUED CARE, Guided Path
This program provides assistance for those that are finished with physical therapy or those with morbidities and are eager to continue improving, along with prevention of re-injury.

DOWN SYNDROME FITNESS, Uplift
Improves overall health, especially cardiovascular and strength for individuals with Down Syndrome. Designed as a circuit-style workout, includes focus on balance, motor functions, coordination along with cardiovascular & strength activities. *Mishawaka Location Only

HEART ATTACK/HEART DISEASE FITNESS, Heart Healthy
Congratulations on completing your initial cardiac rehab – you are now ready for the next step in improving your heart health. Next, you will continue cardiac fitness, with the addition of strength, endurance and yoga exercises. Your progress is monitored and shared with your physicians.

NEUROLOGICAL AQUATIC FITNESS, NeuroH2O
For those with a diagnosed neurological condition such as neuropathy, stroke, spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury, this program will help improve your quality of life through activities in the warm water therapy pool. It can also enhance your balance, flexibility, endurance, strength and thinking.

PARKINSON’S FITNESS, CLIMB
This program will help improve your quality of life through better breathing, movement, balance and posture. It also builds a sense of camaraderie and friendship among participants and caregivers.

PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (PAD) FITNESS , Steps Ahead
Exercise training is critically important to prevent and help treat PAD. You will take part in cardiovascular exercise sessions for 45-60 minutes. Exercise Physiologists will customize programs specific to you to increase exercise tolerance, along with increased blood flow in the legs, improve walking efficiency, increase strength and improve quality of life.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT, MOVE
Focus on setting realistic goals and developing new physical activity habits while pursuing a healthy weight. MOVE helps tackle co-morbidities which encompass high blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated glucose levels and BMI that exceed 30. Participants go through a health assessment, take part in cardiovascular activity, strength & flexibility training and discuss nutritional needs. These group classes allow participants to get the support to succeed in this journey to a healthier person. Classes are led by Fitness Specialists, Wellness Coaches and Nutritional Information provided by Registered Dietitians. This collaboration will lead our members to success in their weight management journey.

Jake is passionate about working with people who have medical conditions, orthopedic limitations, and those looking to change their body composition. His philosophy and exercise programming is based on a deep scientific understanding of the human body, scientific research in the field, and writings from some of the most successful fitness professionals in the country. He strives to provide safe, effective workouts that are designed specifically for the goals and ability level of each individual. He also specializes in working with people who have medical conditions or who have not exercised before, and progressing them to be the best they can be. He believes fitness is a lifelong journey that anyone can enjoy!

Jake oversees the Beacon Best Medicine Program and teaches the Heart Healthy (Phase IV Cardiac Rehab) & The CLIMB (Parkinson’s fitness) class. He also oversees the transition of those with a physical therapist or physician referral into our three Beacon Health & Fitness facilities using out medically integrated model.

Kayla is passionate about working with various populations on achieving their health and fitness goals. She has experience working with individuals with cancer, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and other chronic conditions. Kayla’s main focus is to help people gain a better overall quality of life while improving strength and endurance. She is happy to be a part of someone’s fitness journey and watch them improve on step at a time.

I have worked with the CLIMB program since 2015 and enjoy helping Parkinson’s patients reach their fitness goals. It is so rewarding to help someone improve their balance, walking and strength after participating in class. Members enjoy the social aspect of being in a group setting twice a week and are so encouraging to each other. Many of our members have been with us since the start of the program in 2015. The class is available to all levels and lots of modifications are offered. We offer everything from Yoga, strength, Pilates, basketball and pickleball in our CLIMB program.

Sarah is tremendously passionate about working with people who have limitations to exercise due to disabilities or chronic conditions. She has experience working with individuals with Down syndrome, Autism, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease, cerebral palsy, and many other conditions. She takes great pride in our Best Medicine classes because she loves being able to provide an inclusive environment for individuals to reach their goals. Sarah orients her exercise programming around improving the ability to perform activities of daily living and the overall quality of life.

“My young adult daughter, Katie, has Down Syndrome and, like many of us, puts exercise at the bottom of her priority list.  I am determined to help her live a healthy life, but her activity level decreased as she aged out of the school system. Jessica DuBois Beacon Health & Fitness Granger Personal Trainer

Jessica has always had a passion for fitness and helping people find joy in movement.  She has trained clients with various conditions ranging from Parkinson’s,  joint replacement, MS, Cancer, and other conditions.  Jessica uses her educational background to find safe and effective exercises to meet your goals whether you are an elite athlete or new to exercise.  Jessica teaches many group exercises classes including:  Pilates Chair/Barre, Water In Motion, Pilates Reformer, Strength, and Cardio Dance.  When Jessica is not working, you can find her choreographing for musicals at Premier Arts in Downtown Elkhart and instructing dance classes there as well.  Movement is medicine and she is so happy to get to share her knowledge with Beacon and their members!

My passion started from sports but I fell in love working with people from all sorts of fitness backgrounds and goals. I believe well structured, patient, compassionate coaching makes the real difference, and I strive to create meaningful and lasting change in someone’s life.

She is passionate about using water exercise for individuals seeking to improve strength, balance, flexibility, range of motion and an overall sense of well-being. Mary Sue’s background in aquatic training and certifications has been with some of the best in the aquatic fitness and therapy field through Aquatic Exercise Association and Aquatic Therapy Rehab Institute. She is convinced no mater your age or level of abilities that water works, when you work it! Aquasizers will frequently hear her say: ”water exercise – all gain, no pain  – fitness that’s fun!”

Mallory Conrad Beacon health and fitness

Mallory loves to interact and create relationships with members. Her goal is to help others get excited about fitness and to see results with their health. She likes to provide variety to exercise, to challenge members, and keep them engaged. Mallory has been involved with athletics her whole life both as a player and as a coach. She has trained as a soccer athlete working on endurance, speed, and agility, as well as a thrower in track working on coordination, strength, and power.

As a RN, Christine loves being able to watch individuals grow in their health from the inside out, and she loves being able to relate to her participant’s experiences with their workouts on the floor and their journey with treatments and hospital care. Whether its discussing health goals or learning new equipment, Christine works hard to empower each individual she works with. Not only does Christine teach best medicine classes, but she also teaches cardio dance classes in the group fitness setting to help individuals break a sweat while having a lot of fun.

Brenda has been a group fitness instructor since 2017, she enjoys teaching & working with a wide variety of people. As a former member who was plagued with numerous joint issues, she understands the needs of others with similar issues. Modifications are an important part of an exercise routine when you have joint problems. Because exercise is important for everyone, the Beacon Best Medicine program is a great resource.
