Infant Mortality Rates

Infant mortality rate compares the number of deaths of infants under one year old in a given year per 1,000 live births in the same year. This rate is often used as an indicator of the level of health in a country.

Between 2009 and 2013, African Americans in St. Joseph County had the highest infant mortality rate in at 16.9%. During the same time period, the infant mortality rate for Hispanics in Indiana was 8.1%.

3rd Grade Reading Score

Third grade is the year that students move from learning to read to reading to learn. Students move from reading primers to fact-filled texts that guide learning. If fluent reading is not established here the comprehension gap will continue to grow. Not obtaining proficiency at this grade level is an indicator of dropping out of high school.

In the 2014-15 school year, only 74.5% of African American students, and 86.7% of Hispanic students in South Bend Community School Corporation schools passed the I Read-3, whereas 92.9% of white students passed. This is significantly different from Indiana overall, with the state average showing 85.2% of African American students, and 94.8% of Hispanic students passing.
