Significant Health Need

Healthy Body: Obesity/Overweight- County Health Rankings show that nearly 1/3 of the total adult population in the three counties assessed was obese in 2014. Among the three counties, EC’s rate is higher than IN. All 3 counties as well as state have a higher percentage of adult obesity than the national rate. According to the Indiana Youth Institute, 1 in 3 children ages 10-17 are overweight or obese (33.9%), 5.7% of children ages 10-17 are underweight. According to WIC, by 2017, 13.5% of children between 2-5 years of age who are part of the program were obese. Obesity rates in 2017 for EC (14.5%), MC (15.2%) and SJC (14.3%) are higher than IN.

Priority Focus 1: Improve nutritional, physical activity and weight-related outcomes of children

Priority Focus 2: Increase parent/guardian engagement in promoting health/wellness and academic learning.

Priority Focus 3: Decrease the number of diabetic/pre-diabetic children and adults.
