Introducing the new Beacon Bits

This is our brand NEW weekly roundup of the latest happenings across our health system. Hang on, here we go…

amy-tinlin-2Amy Tinlin, RN, OCN, nurse navigator and survivorship coordinator, has been awarded the American Cancer Society Dedication Award for 2017. The American Cancer Society will honor Tinlin with the award on Aug. 4 at the annual American Cancer Society Night of the Stars. “Amy’s dedication, compassion and knowledge are what make Beacon oncology services stand out amongst the rest,” says Dr. Thomas Reid, III, director, Memorial Regional Cancer Center and chief, Hematology-Medical Oncology, Memorial Hospital of South Bend. “Without hyperbole, our program could not function without Amy — she is essential and Beacon is indeed fortunate to have Amy as part of the team.” We couldn’t agree more.

For anyone who parks in the associate parking garage at Elkhart General Hospital, phase 2 of repairs starts Monday, March 27. Parking will be restricted on the north end of the 5th floor — the elevator side — and in the area directly beneath the construction on the 4th floor. This work is expected to last five days, says Dave Furlong, Facilities Management Director.

If you have your calendar handy, here are some “Save the Dates” to keep in mind…

Here’s a chance to take a peek inside the new home for our Children’s Hospital at an Associate Open House scheduled on May 1. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., associates can take guided tours and enjoy refreshments before the grand opening.

Strike Out Stroke is planned for Friday, May 5 at Four Winds Field. The South Bend Cubs game starts at 7:35 p.m. and the festivities surrounding the annual event for Stroke Awareness Month will include: free blood pressure checks; a Memorial MedFlight flyover at the start of the game; prizes and drawings and fireworks. Dr. Jose Lopez, Neurologist, will be a guest interview that night. Thanks to Bonnie Willis, Stroke Coordinator at Memorial Hospital, for the info.

And if that’s not enough baseball for you, Beacon Night at the South Bend Cubs is scheduled for June 16. Tickets will go on sale in May. The game starts at 7:35 p.m. Your $7 ticket includes admission, a hot dog and soda.

nicholebaldwinNichole Baldwin, Home Care Liaison at Elkhart General Hospital, gets a special shout-out for going above and beyond to deliver exceptional service to a patient who was being discharged with equipment. Nichole stayed late and assisted the patient with the equipment and provided car-side service. The Rehab Team’s Director, Tammy Hayes, awarded Nichole with the “Shooting Star” recognition for Exceptional Customer Care. Outstanding work, Nichole.

That’s all for now.

If you have something to contribute to Beacon Bits, we’re all ears. Shoot an email to TheBeam@beaconhealthsystem.org.
