Atrial Fibrillation and the Role of the Watchman Procedure

Presented by: Mayank Mittal, MD and Gurudutt Kulkarni, MD

Learning Objectives:

• Review contemporary management of atrial fibrillation
• Discuss stroke prevention strategies – pharmacological and nonpharmacological
• Identify who will benefit from left atrial appendage closure

Dr. Kulkarni received his medical degree from Jawaharal Nehru Medical College and completed his internship and residency at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his cardiology fellowship and clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Dr. Kulkarni is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology.

Dr. Mittal received his medical degree from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, India. He completed his internship at Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, India and postgraduate training in the United Kingdom. He also completed clinical simulation and medical education fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He then went to University of Missouri, Columbia for cardiovascular research fellowship, internal medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship. He completed his interventional cardiology fellowship at Borgess Heart Institute, Kalamazoo with the Michigan State University. Dr. Mittal is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He is board eligible for Interventional cardiology. Dr. Mittal’s clinical interests include management of coronary and peripheral arterial disease including complex high risk interventions, management of resistant hypertension including renal artery stenting, adult structural heart disease such as atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closure, and valvular heart disease such as aortic stenosis including TAVR. He is dedicated to providing state of the art, evidence based cost effective care for cardiovascular disease to his patients. Dr. Mittal has widely published and presented his research in medical education and cardiovascular field. He has received several awards and grants for his research, especially for developing a new drug eluting stent. Dr. Mittal serves on editorial boards of scientific journals. He is a Fellow of American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians. When he is not at work, he enjoys traveling, running and spending time with his family.
