Does the CMS SEP1 Measure Positively Impact Patient Care? A Panel Discussion

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify the functional sepsis definition used by CMS SEP1 measure
  • Recognize the complexity of the SEP1 measure
  • Discuss controversial aspects of SEP1 measure compliance, including the weight based fluid  bolus requirement
  • Provide examples of when procalcitonin use may be helpful in designing antimicrobial regimens

Dr Annan graduated from medical school in 2001 from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.  In 2008 he graduated from residency from Saint Barnabas Medical center and completed a fellowship in 2012 from Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center.  Dr. Annan is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.





Dr. Jahangir completed medical school in 2003 from Dow Medical College and Karachi University.  In 2010 he graduated residency from Louis Weiss Hospital and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.





Dr. Jansen completed undergrad and medical school from the University of Alberta.  In 1980 he graduated residency from University Alberta Hospital.  Dr. Jansen is Board Certified in Family Medicine.




Dr. Onunkwo received his medical degree at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria and completed his internships in internal medicine, pediatrics, OBGYN and surgery at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. He completed his internal medicine residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Jersey City, New Jersey and his fellowship in infectious disease at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.





Dr. Mark A Quiring, MD, is an Emergency Medicine specialist in Elkhart, Indiana. He attended and graduated from University Of California, California College Of Medicine in 2005, having over 14 years of diverse experience, especially in Emergency Medicine. He is affiliated with many hospitals including Elkhart General Hospital, Iu Health Goshen Hospital, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Dr. Mark A Quiring also cooperates with other doctors and physicians in medical groups including Elkhart Emergency Physicians Inc.




Eli Opacich, PharmD

Kim Moore, BSN, RN Work in Clinical Data Management as a Clinical Data Analyst. Responsible for abstracting charts for the Sepsis measure.
