I can remember sitting around the dinner table while I was in grade school\, and my mom\, a pediatric nurse\, telling us about her day. My fascination with the body grew as I began to participate in sports and only continued to expand with my high school physiology and biology classes.” \nDr. Ketcham chose to study medicine at an osteopathic medical school because he appreciated its core teachings of the body as a complete functional unit and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. These principles carry over into his practice in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. \n“Typically\, by the time I see the patient either in the inpatient rehabilitation or outpatient setting\, he or she is already on the road to recovery. It’s my job to work with patients to help them overcome physical impairments due to stroke\, traumatic brain injury\, amputation\, spinal cord injury or a medical illness. Sometimes it’s as easy as prescribing an ankle brace. Many times\, however\, I’ll work with therapists\, prosthetists\, social workers and other physicians as part of a full rehabilitation team to aid in patients’ physical recovery.” \nOutside of work\, Dr. Ketcham loves spending time with his wife and kids\, being active outdoors\, and playing softball.

During this process she developed an interest in serving trans\, non-binary and gender-fluid patients\, as well as other marginalized groups who have been alienated by traditional healthcare or have limited access to whole-person primary care. \nAfter graduating from the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program at Memorial Hospital in 2016\, Dr. Bast\, along with her partner Mixhi Marquis\, combined their passions for LGBTQ2IA+ advocacy\, wellness\, and healthcare to open Mosaic Health and Healing Arts. \nToday\, Katie is a board certified family practice physician and is a member of the GLMA (Gay and Lesbian Medical Association) and WPATH (World Professional Association for Trans Health). She also serves as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at IU School of Medicine. She understands that her medical degree gives her power\, which she uses to stand up for healing\, for giving life\, and for empowering others. \nShe is also mother to three fantastic young adults\, and likes reading\, running\, painting and glitter.

I chose a career in ENT because of the interesting and complicated anatomy. Also\, while ENT is a surgical specialty\, there is a vast array of diverse conditions we get to treat and surgical procedures we can perform.”\nDr. Gentile received her bachelor of science in biology from the University of Kentucky before pursuing her doctorate in medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Gentile completed her residency in otolaryngology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. But Dr. Mitchell E. Daugherty has been around medicine his entire life; his mother and sister are both nurses. “I thought I would enjoy practicing medicine\, so I made it my personal goal\, and I stuck with it. My love of science classes along with volunteer work in local physician offices and hospitals helped solidify this decision.” \nTo achieve this goal\, Dr. Daugherty pursued his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford after receiving his bachelor of science at the University of Illinois in Urbana. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at Memorial Hospital in South Bend and his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at The Ohio State University. \nThe most important knowledge for Dr. Daugherty came from outside of school. “I learned medicine from textbooks and teachers\, but I’ve learned how to be a good physician from my patients. As his knowledge grew\, and he learned he could leverage these passions to decrease suffering and improve quality of life\, he knew that medicine would be the perfect career choice. \nAs an orthopedic surgeon\, Dr. McCoy treats fractures of the pelvis and extremities\, as well as arthritis\, bones that do not heal properly\, and bone infections. “I unfortunately often meet patients following a traumatic event\,” he says. “But I feel tremendously honored to play a role in the transformative process of healing and recuperation. It is a unique privilege to minimize disability and maximize rehabilitation for patients who have suffered from traumatic musculoskeletal injuries.” \nDr. McCoy is frequently asked whether orthopedic surgery is “barbaric\,” but he likes to inform people that this type of surgery is actually quite meticulous and delicate. He takes great care to maximize healing potential for his patients\, and is committed to being there for them each step of the way. \nDr. McCoy studied at UCLA\, and completed his fellowship at Indiana University. He went on to complete fellowships in Orthopedic Musculoskeletal at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota and Orthopedic Traumatology at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis\, Indiana. \nAdditionally\, Dr. Post has authored or co-authored several medical manuscripts\, book chapters and has given lectures both regionally and nationally on various orthopedic topics. He is a member of: the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics\, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society\, AOTrauma Association\, Orthopedic Trauma Association\, and Sigma Sigma Phi Beta Chapter\, also known as the National Osteopathic Honor Fraternity. \nDr. Post also brings a new specialty to Beacon and to the Northern Indiana Region with his additional training in musculoskeletal oncology. He sees both pediatric and adult patients with benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumors. \nIn his free time\, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 young girls. The family enjoys running\, hiking and the great outdoors. Dr. Post has traveled regularly to Honduras and Africa to volunteer with various world Christian Medical Mission Orthopedic outreach programs. \n  \nDr. Pratik B. Patel\, always had an interest in the underlying science behind how the body works. This coupled with experiences volunteering in health care settings locally and internationally\, eventually led him to pick medicine as a career. His studies have taken him to the University of Virginia\, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and McGaw Medical Center\, and he’s served as an Orthopedic Trauma Fellow in Pittsburg\, PA. \nAs an orthopedic trauma surgeon\, he treats pelvis and upper/lower extremity fractures. “I chose trauma specifically due to the variety of cases\,” he said. “Usually when the bone breaks\, there are associated injuries with nearby muscles\, tendons\, ligaments\, etc.\, and my job is to repair all these components.” \nPart of the process in helping patients regain function requires listening to them\, Dr. Patel said. “The details of each patient’s story and circumstances are all important and can guide you toward the best treatment option. While Injuries can be similar\, every patient is unique and requires individualized care.” \nBeing a skilled surgeon is only part of the job\, as Dr. Patel sees it. He strives to be an advocate throughout the entire process. He treats patients as he would a family member\, sharing the process of deciding on treatment or intervention. “Orthopedics is a team sport – the physician\, patient\, nurses\, and therapists all work together towards a common goal\,” he said. In the end\, he hopes his patients will ask questions and ultimately be comfortable with their decision.

She also has an Addiction Medicine practice at Oaklawn\nSouth Bend. \nHer interest in Addiction Medicine grew out of her time as a junior faculty member at Indiana\nUniversity School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine. There\, she designed and\nimplemented Project POINT\, a collaborative effort aimed at identifying\, treating and linking\npatients with opioid use disorders to life saving medications and post discharge treatment.\nSince moving to South Bend in 2019\, Dr Brucker has supported expanded access to medications\nfor Opioid Use Disorder both within Beacon Health System and through her work in the Addiction\nMedicine program at Oaklawn South Bend and with the county’s Opioid Response Team.\nDr. Brucker completed her emergency medicine residency at Northwestern University’s Feinberg\nSchool of Medicine in Chicago\, IL. The session will cover both how to help people move from active drug\nuse onto buprenorphine as well as how to take care of people who are maintained on\nbuprenorphine. In addition to discussing routine cases\, we’ll also walk through several of the\nmore common clinical complexities that arise: including patients using fentanyl\, pregnancy\,\nacute pain\, liver disease and sedative co-prescribing.

DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Teams Link  \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nRobotic Surgery 101 \nPresented By: Nicholas Miller\, MD\nGeneral Surgery\, Beacon Health System \nNicholas Miller\, MD\, began his working career as a commercial photographer. After he suffered the loss of a friend through a tragic car accident\, he began to rethink his calling. “Through the time spent in the hospital with [my friend] and his family\, I felt the calling to pursue a career in medicine\, and ultimately in surgery\,” he says. \nDr. Miller does not have any other family members in the medical profession. He comes from a long line of Amish cabinet makers\, who have been in that business since 1918. “I am fluent in Pennsylvania Dutch and love to use the mother tongue to connect with my Amish and Mennonite patients.” \nToward the end of the six-year period working as a photographer and graphic designer\, he earned his Bachelor of Science at the University of Akron\, majoring in Biology. During college\, he founded a small web-based company that sold custom leather goods to customers around the globe. He worked with local Amish leather shops to create and fulfill orders. While running this online business\, he began medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine\, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. \nHe describes his philosophy of surgery as “a pursuit of the highest technical standards of excellence\, combined with a desire to create a deep personal connection with each patient.” \nDr. Miller says\, “One of the greatest things I have gained from observing my patients is that ordinary people are often capable of great courage.” \n  \nDisclosure Statement: Dr. Miller is a consultant for Intuitive Surgical\, the makers of the DaVinci robotic surgery system. In this role\, Dr. Miller provides proctoring services for surgeons learning the DaVinci system. This presentation primarily focused on general robotic surgery. While there are currently no other FDA-approved competitors\, systems in development were mentioned. All relevant financial relationships were reviewed and appropriately mitigated prior to the activity.

Dr. Eshowsky also serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer for Beacon Health System\, and is also a member of Beacon Medical Group’s Physician Governance Council. He is passionate about achieving clinical excellence by enhancing and standardizing the use of technology for all of Beacon’s caregivers.

But he knew he needed to do something more than bench research. After researching jobs in science and speaking with family friends\, he realized anesthesia would be the perfect profession for him. “I have the opportunity to help people on a daily basis\, and I get to be a science nerd at the same time.” \nDr. Gursky provides anesthesia services for heart and lung surgeries. “During the case\, it is my job to make sure that you are completely asleep\, and you wake up with minimal pain or discomfort\,” he explains. He also ensures that vital signs are all within the correct ranges throughout the surgery and that everything goes well from a medical standpoint. \nHe chose to practice at Beacon because of its great cardiac surgery department. “The cases and outcomes here are outstanding\,” he explains. “The patient’s quality of life is often drastically improved as a result of the care they receive at Beacon. It makes my job very rewarding.” \nWhen it comes to his practice\, Dr. Gursky has a simple philosophy: vigilance and standardization. “I do my best to be vigilant and do the same thing the same way every time to ensure the best outcome possible.” \nThe way Dr. Gursky sees it\, he is in a unique position. “Patients generally have a long-standing relationship with their doctors\,” he explains. “A patient meets me for ten minutes before their major heart surgery. I spend the entire day with them\, but they are only awake for a few minutes of it. I hope that my brief time with them fills them with confidence in my abilities.” He adds\, “I’ve learned that even when someone is ill\, they can see the bright future ahead. I hope that patients get a sense of calm when meeting me.”
