SUMMARY:Office of National Drug Control Policy\, Federal Drug Control Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Recording  \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nOffice of National Drug Control Policy\, Federal Drug Control Initiatives \nPresented By: Rahul Gupta MD\, MPH\, FACP\, MBA – Director of National Control Policy\, The White House \nRahul Gupta\, MD\, MPH\, MBA\, FACP\, is the first medical doctor to serve as the Director of National Drug Control Policy and lead the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)\, a component of the Executive Office of the President. \n  \nA board-certified internist\, Dr. Gupta has been a practicing primary care physician for more than 25 years\, and has served in private practice and public health in towns as small as 1\,900 residents and cities as large as 25 million. He has served as a local public health official and as the West Virginia Health Commissioner under two governors\, where he brought together public health\, law enforcement\, healthcare\, faith-based\, business\, and other community partners to solve local problems in novel and innovative ways. As the state’s Chief Health Officer\, he led the opioid crisis response and launched a number of pioneering public health initiatives\, including the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Birthscore program to identify high-risk infants\, and the groundbreaking statewide Social Autopsy\, which examined the lives of overdose victims to determine the factors that led to their deaths and what services could have prevented their deaths. This led the state to expand access to naloxone as well as treatment services including those for incarcerated individuals in order to save lives and help people transition back into society. He supported the expansion of harm reduction programs to more than a dozen sites across the state. He was also instrumental in expanding state-of the-art\, comprehensive and integrative medical and behavioral health programs for pregnant and postpartum women. \nDr. Gupta is a national and global thought leader and a driver of innovative public policies who practices what he preaches. He is a buprenorphine-waivered practitioner\, providing medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid use disorder. He has been recognized for his career of public service by the American Medical Association\, the American Public Health Association\, and by Governing Magazine\, which named him their Public Health Official of the Year in 2018. Additionally\, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Charleston Gazette-Mail named him as one of its West Virginians of the Year in 2017 for his service to the state.

SUMMARY:Confidentiality in PEER Review
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Access OnDemand Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nConfidentiality in PEER Review \nPresented By: Chris Eades\, Attorney – Hall Render Advisory Services \n \nChris Eades focuses his practice in the areas of virtual care and medical staff governance. With respect to the latter\, Chris regularly counsels clients on matters involving medical staff credentialing and peer review\, as well as interpretation and application of hospital and professional licensure rules\, Medicare conditions of participation\, accreditation standards\, and medical staff governing documents. There is wide variability among jurisdictions in their approach to telehealth and telemedicine. Chris assists the firm’s clients to navigate this variability and to understand and appropriately apply the relevant telemedicine rules and regulations\, particularly those involving the professional practice of virtual care. These matters routinely involve professional licensure requirements\, delegated credentialing agreements\, scope of practice considerations\, informed consent for telemedicine services\, related recordkeeping requirements\, telemedicine prescription requirements and other aspects of virtual care workflow. Chris enjoys speaking at conferences and events throughout the year on aspects of virtual care\, particularly as the applicable regulatory framework continues to evolve in response to the wealth of potential made possible through telemedicine technology.

Dr. Mittal serves on editorial boards of scientific journals. He is a Fellow of American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians. When he is not at work\, he enjoys traveling\, running and spending time with his family. \n  \n  \n \nDr. Weber was drawn to cardiothoracic surgery because of his fascination with the complexity of the human heart and lungs. He loves to help patients in challenging situations\, while understanding how difficult it can be for someone to hear that they need surgery. “I believe open communication with my patients is crucial to providing the best possible care.” This often means customizing operative plans tailored to each patient’s needs and expectations. \nWhen it comes to his patients\, Dr. Weber’s philosophy is simple\, yet powerful: “I’ve been privileged to treat patients who come from so many different backgrounds and life experiences. By listening to them and their families\, I have learned so much about their expectations and ultimately how best to treat and communicate with them.” He wants his patients to understand that he’s dedicated to their health and well-being. “I care about their medical condition but – possibly more importantly – I care about them as people.”

SUMMARY:Food for Thought: Tools and Challenges in Critical Care Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access OnDemand Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation \nFood for Thought: Tools and Challenges in Critical Care Nutrition. \nPresented By: Colin Fath\, MD \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nUnderstand the potential benefits and risks in nutritional support for the critically ill patient\nRecognize the multiple barriers between our patients and optimal nutrition in ICU\nIdentify the strategies and tools available to improve patient outcomes despite these hurdles\n\nWhile Colin T. Fath\, MD\, started his college career as a chemical engineering major\, he pivoted toward medicine as he saw many engineers moving into management roles as they progressed in their field. “In the hospital I have the opportunity to keep practicing science\, work closely with people\, and have more chances to be of service in my community\,” he says. \nThe field of medicine was also a familiar one to him with both grandfathers\, his father\, and one of his sisters in this line of work. Dr. Fath chose to focus on acute care and typically treats surgical emergencies\, such as a car accident or an inflamed appendix. “My role is to guide those who are at their very sickest back toward safety\,” he says. “Between emergencies\, I treat general surgical problems such as hernias\, lumps and gallbladder disease.” \nHe studied at the University of Notre Dame where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He then graduated from Wayne State School of Medicine\, Detroit\, with his Medical Degree. His residency was completed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics\, Iowa City\, in general surgery and his fellowship in surgical critical care was at University of Kentucky\, Lexington. \nDr. Fath sees his role as advisor\, with the final decision always with the patients he was done his best to make well-informed. He educates patients on their condition\, treatment options and what to expect in the various scenarios. “The right choice depends on each individual’s specific situation and values\,” he says. \nHe believes that while people will eventually become ill\, they will be better able to tackle a setback and other challenges in life if they have first taken care of their health.
