Sedation Manual

Diagnostic and surgical procedures are being performed in a variety of locations throughout the hospital. This self-study program has been developed to increase your awareness and reinforce your understanding of the use of sedation for both adult and pediatric patients. We assume the physician has a basic knowledge of airway management, including bag-valve-mask and headtilt.

If you need a refresher in these subjects, please contact the Medical Staff Office at 574.284.7920.

This guide includes indications and contraindications for sedation, administration guidelines, and the hospital’s sedation policy. This booklet consists of three parts. Part 1 is dedicated to an overall review of the principles of moderate/deep sedation and the adult guidelines. Part 2 is related to the sedation of pediatric patients and their special needs. Part 3 is a post-test.
