SUMMARY:The Brain Science of Trust in Our Communities\, Part II: Voices from the Patient Experience
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Teams Link  \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nThe Brain Science of Trust in Our Communities\, Part II: Voices from the Patient Experience \nNancy Michael\, Ph.D.\nDirector of Education\, Co-Director Neuroscience and Behavior; College of Science at the University of Notre Dame \nDr. Nancy Michael earned her doctorate degree in neuroscience from the University of Minnesota in 2012. Her doctoral studies were anchored in the field of behavioral neuroendocrinology where she explored questions of experience dependent plasticity – how experiences with the individuals and the world around us change nervous system structure and function. This curiosity led her to pursue postdoctoral studies in an adolescent development lab\, further developing her ability to interrogate the ways in which experiences moderate brain structure\, function and behavior. Harnessing this background in experience dependent plasticity\, Michael chose to devote her skills to undergraduate educational formation. She joined the Notre Dame faculty in 2014 to develop the newly created undergraduate program in neuroscience and behavior. Over the years\, her dedication to excellence\, innovation in education and commitment to community wellness have earned her numerous teaching\, advising and community awards\, and currently serves as the Director of Education and Co-Director for the Neuroscience and Behavior major at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to her work on campus\, Michael partners with multiple community organizations to develop and implement NEAR science approaches that aim to mitigate the impact of toxic stress and promote healing and resilience of individuals and communities. NEAR stands for Neuroscience\, Epigenetics\, Adverse childhood experiences and Resilience\, and a NEAR-science approach uses a community-centered\, general capacity building model to mobilize the evidence base of the NEAR sciences in support of practical skill development for individuals and community organizations.\nBroadly\, Dr. Michael’s work collaboratively develops population-specific\, NEAR-based strategies to support practical skill building for community healing and resilience efforts. Her work is published across a wide variety of platforms ranging from primary scientific journals\, book chapters\, to children’s books. Common themes across her writing center around experience dependent plasticity and the critical role relationships play in human learning and well-being. In addition to her written works\, Dr. Michael takes a leadership role in designing and executing a wide variety of professional development opportunities to support individuals in the “helping professions” (e.g. educators\, youth workers\, mental health professionals\, community health workers\, medical professionals\, etc.). Dr. Michael is known for making very complex information accessible and actionable in practical contexts. The breadth of her productivity is indicative of her desire to not only participate in knowledge generation\, but to support the translation of the neuroscientific knowledge base into practical skills\, behaviors and habits of mind that become present in our daily living.

SUMMARY:Culinary Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Teams Link  \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation \nCulinary Medicine  \nPresented By: Tessa Keiser\, MD\nFamily Medicine\, Memorial Family Medical Residency \n I am a small-town girl who had big dreams of becoming a doctor from a young age\, despite coming from a non-medical family. I was drawn to the idea of being able to care for other people in a profound way while constantly experiencing new intellectual challenges and opportunities to learn. I also grew up with a passion for the environment\, and I pursued a college degree in Environmental Studies with a capstone project focused on possible pesticide contaminants in a local river. I hope to integrate some of my environmental knowledge into my career in the future by doing public health work\, advocating for policies and programs that protect and enhance the health of humans as well as the world in which we live. In medical school\, I knew early on that Family Medicine was the right specialty for me – I loved caring for every aspect of a patient’s health\, building long-term relationships\, maintaining a huge breadth of medical knowledge\, and focusing on preventive care and community health. I plan to one day be a full-spectrum family physician in a rural area of the Midwest. Outside of medicine\, my family is the center of my life. I am blessed to be married to my high-school sweetheart\, Dylan\, who works as a teacher. Our household is run by our two cats\, Oliver and Mr. Wickers. I also love spending time with my parents\, sister\, and two nephews every chance I get.

SUMMARY:Benign Breast Disease
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Teams Recording  \nBenign Breast Disease \nPresented By: Katherine Goze\, MD\nTrauma and Surgical Services\, Beacon Medical Group \nDr. Kate Goze decided on a career in medicine when she was 15 years old. Being exposed to her grandmother who loved being a nurse\, and spending time herself in the hospital for her own illness as a child confirmed this decision. “Not only was I raised knowing that nursing is a truly noble profession\,” Dr. Goze said\, “but the comfort I felt knowing that the doctors and nurses would take care of me was something I knew I had to share with others.” She began her career as a nurse in the Emergency Department at Memorial Hospital.\nDr. Goze enrolled at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis to transition from registered nurse to physician\, initially expecting to choose a path in Emergency Medicine. The more time she spent in the operating room\, however\, the more she realized surgery would be the perfect fit so she can care for patients throughout their journey.\n“I wanted to be able to see patients through their entire hospital experience and then back in the clinic after they recovered\,” Dr. Goze said. “This was the biggest thing that led me to a career in surgery. I fell in love with the operating room and the feeling of being able to ‚Äòfix’ a problem and see the result in a very rewarding way. I knew that there was no other job for me.”\nDr. Goze has returned to Beacon Health System because of its model for excellence and patient-centered care. “I hope my patients know that I truly care about their well being and their outcome. I treat each patient as if they are family; that way\, I am certain that they are always getting my best\,” she said. “And my nursing background gives me a unique perspective and a very compassionate approach to patient care.”

SUMMARY:Multi-Modal Pain Management
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Teams Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation \nMulti-Modal Pain Management \nPresented By: Drew Michael Donnell\, MD\nPain Medicine/ Anesthesiology\, Beacon Health System \n \nWhile taking part in biomedical engineering research during high school at the local university\, Drew M. Donnell\, MD\, initially elected to study business and sports administration. He then transitioned to studying applied mathematics in the context of health care. Ultimately\, he decided there wasn’t enough interpersonal contact with patients. “I did not choose medicine until I firsthand experienced transformations in quality of life from various high-intensity surgeries during graduate school\, prior to matriculating into medicine\,” he says. \nHe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Movement Science at University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. This was followed by a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from University of Pittsburgh. It was here that he also graduated from the university’s School of Medicine as an MD. He completed a General Surgery Internship and Anesthesiology Residency at Ohio State University\, and a Multidisciplinary Pain Fellowship at Northwestern University. \nDr. Donnell is the first medical doctor in his family\, although his mother is a clinical psychologist. He chose the field of anesthesiology because of its complexity and frequent utilization of advanced technology. “I’ve administered anesthesia for everything from liver transplants to simple ankle reductions\, but ultimately it all comes down to protecting the patient and their physiology.” \nIn addition\, he practices interventional pain management\, to improve the quality of life for individuals affected long term by serious discomfort. “Pain management is a natural extension of anesthesiology that offers more face time with patients and an array of rapidly evolving interventions\,” he says. \nDr. Donnell delivers care to help patients be more comfortable and he works to enable them to be able to do more of the activities that give their lives meaning. \nThrough the years his patients have taught him that complex problems often have simple solutions\, but the opposite also holds true\, he says. “Medicine is one of the toughest jobs around\, but is unmatched in its ability to affect others\,” he says.
