SUMMARY:Pediatric Hyperosmotic Hyperglycemic Syndrome and Diabetic Ketoacidosis
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Recording Link  \nPediatric Hyperosmotic Hyperglycemic Syndrome and Diabetic Ketoacidosis \nPresented by: Dr. Siarhei Slinko\, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine\, Beacon Health System \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss what Hyperosmotic Hyperglycemic Syndrome is and how it presents\nReview management recommendations of Hyperosmotic Hyperglycemic Syndrome\n\nAbout the presenter \nDr. Siarhei Slinko became hooked on a career in medicine as a  teenager in high school\, taking inspiration from his father\, who was a military doctor\, and his sister\, a pediatric surgeon. \n“During her residency\, I shadowed my sister on one of her busy calls\,” he explains. “I still remember the striking impression of witnessing the emotional transition of those little patients and their parents – from the physical and emotional pain and fear to relief\, joy and happiness – because of the medical team’s work. I realized then I wanted to be part of that no matter how hard my journey would be to become a doctor!” \nFor Dr. Slinko\, there is nothing more rewarding than helping a critically ill child recover. “The job is tough both emotionally and physically\, but so satisfying and joyful.” He chose this specialty in his fourth year of medical school. “I had been moonlighting in the pediatric ICU as a nurse and loved it.” He chose to practice at Beacon because of the strong commitment to putting kids first. “During the interview process\, that’s a statement I heard at every level: ‘Do the right thing for patients and we will all support you!’ That resonated with me a lot\, and that is what I consider to be the priority above everything else.” \nAs for his philosophy of care\, Dr. Slinko believes that kindness\, honesty and integrity matter. “I treat and care for my patients like I would want myself and my loved ones to be treated\,” he says. “I will help the ones who need me to the best of my ability. They can trust me with their lives.” \nDr. Slinko believes that an individual’s life is fulfilled when it’s dedicated to the service of others. “From that aspect\, serving and helping critically ill children is a blessing\, privilege and completely fulfills my life’s goals.”

SUMMARY:Spasticity Management Following Brain/Spinal Cord Insult
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access OnDemand Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nSpasticity Management Following Brain/Spinal Cord Insult \nPresented By: Christopher Ketcham\, MD – Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation\, Beacon Bone and Joint Specialist \nDr. Christopher Ketcham was born and raised in South Bend\, grew up on the south side of town and attended Marian High School. \n“I was exposed to medicine at a very early age. I can remember sitting around the dinner table while I was in grade school\, and my mom\, a pediatric nurse\, telling us about her day. My fascination with the body grew as I began to participate in sports and only continued to expand with my high school physiology and biology classes.” \nDr. Ketcham chose to study medicine at an osteopathic medical school because he appreciated its core teachings of the body as a complete functional unit and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. These principles carry over into his practice in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. \n“Typically\, by the time I see the patient either in the inpatient rehabilitation or outpatient setting\, he or she is already on the road to recovery. It’s my job to work with patients to help them overcome physical impairments due to stroke\, traumatic brain injury\, amputation\, spinal cord injury or a medical illness. Sometimes it’s as easy as prescribing an ankle brace. Many times\, however\, I’ll work with therapists\, prosthetists\, social workers and other physicians as part of a full rehabilitation team to aid in patients’ physical recovery.” \nOutside of work\, Dr. Ketcham loves spending time with his wife and kids\, being active outdoors\, and playing softball.

SUMMARY:Update on Bariatric Surgery
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access OnDemand Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nUpdate on Bariatric Surgery \nPresented by: Bradley Gordan\, DO – General Surgery\, Beacon Health System \nDr. Bradley C. Gordan knew from an early age that he wanted to become a physician. “I always liked to take things apart\, fix them and put them back together\,” he explains. “Surgery is very much like that.” His passion for medicine was solidified when he worked as a brain injury and spinal cord injury rehabilitation tech after graduating college. “Working with those patients was not only a very rewarding experience\, but I also saw how their physicians integrated a team approach — from therapists\, to nurses\, to the techs — to help them through some of the most devastating injuries humans can endure.” \nHe chose to practice at Beacon because of his shared passion for providing excellent care to South Bend and surrounding areas. After completing a Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at URMC Highland Hospital\, he is looking forward to the opportunity to develop a bariatric program and hopefully bring a Bariatric Center of Excellence to the area. “Obesity and its associated chronic health conditions\, such as high blood pressure\, heart disease\, arthritis\, diabetes\, and high cholesterol\, have become an epidemic in this country. Bariatric surgery provides patients the ability to have most of these diseases improve\, if not completely resolve.” \nDr. Gordan strongly believes in the team approach as critical to enabling the best care possible for his patients and their families. “Whether you are a general surgery patient or a bariatric patient\, you will have a team guiding you through your care and recovery\,” Dr. Gordan says\, “we’re here to help you through the whole process\, from myself\, to nurses\, therapists and care coordinators.” \nHe also understands the importance of compassion and humility. “Communication is so critical\,” he says. “I know from experience: surgery is scary. I want to make my patients as comfortable as possible about their procedure. I spend a great deal of time explaining a patient’s diagnosis and what needs to be done to fix their problem\, including hand-drawn pictures for them. I always say pictures are worth a thousand words.” \nDr. Gordan wants his patients to know that he will always provide the same care for them that he would want for himself and his own family. “I hope they understand that I’m no different from them. I’m human\, I have a family and a child. I’m here to help them — to improve their condition and their quality of life.”
