SUMMARY:Management of Hip Fractures in the Older Adult; Updated Guidelines and Team Based Care
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access OnDemand Recording \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nManagement of Hip Fractures in the Older Adult; Updated Guidelines and Team Based Care \nPresented By: Eric McCoy\, MD\, Joel Post\, MD\, and Pratik Patel\, MD – Beacon Orthopedic Group \n  \nDr. Eric McCoy says he has always held a fascination for physiology\, biology\, and the musculoskeletal system. As his knowledge grew\, and he learned he could leverage these passions to decrease suffering and improve quality of life\, he knew that medicine would be the perfect career choice. \nAs an orthopedic surgeon\, Dr. McCoy treats fractures of the pelvis and extremities\, as well as arthritis\, bones that do not heal properly\, and bone infections. “I unfortunately often meet patients following a traumatic event\,” he says. “But I feel tremendously honored to play a role in the transformative process of healing and recuperation. It is a unique privilege to minimize disability and maximize rehabilitation for patients who have suffered from traumatic musculoskeletal injuries.” \nDr. McCoy is frequently asked whether orthopedic surgery is “barbaric\,” but he likes to inform people that this type of surgery is actually quite meticulous and delicate. He takes great care to maximize healing potential for his patients\, and is committed to being there for them each step of the way. \nDr. McCoy studied at UCLA\, and completed his fellowship at Indiana University. He joined Beacon for its dedication to excellence\, and for its focus on camaraderie and teamwork. In his free time\, he enjoys hiking\, running\, weightlifting\, and spending time outdoors with his wife and son. \n  \nDr. Post received his medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines\, Iowa. He then pursued an orthopedic surgery residency at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital in Lansing\, Michigan. He went on to complete fellowships in Orthopedic Musculoskeletal at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota and Orthopedic Traumatology at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis\, Indiana. \nAdditionally\, Dr. Post has authored or co-authored several medical manuscripts\, book chapters and has given lectures both regionally and nationally on various orthopedic topics. He is a member of: the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics\, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society\, AOTrauma Association\, Orthopedic Trauma Association\, and Sigma Sigma Phi Beta Chapter\, also known as the National Osteopathic Honor Fraternity. \nDr. Post also brings a new specialty to Beacon and to the Northern Indiana Region with his additional training in musculoskeletal oncology. He sees both pediatric and adult patients with benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumors. \nIn his free time\, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 young girls. The family enjoys running\, hiking and the great outdoors. Dr. Post has traveled regularly to Honduras and Africa to volunteer with various world Christian Medical Mission Orthopedic outreach programs. \n  \nDr. Pratik B. Patel\, always had an interest in the underlying science behind how the body works. This coupled with experiences volunteering in health care settings locally and internationally\, eventually led him to pick medicine as a career. His studies have taken him to the University of Virginia\, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and McGaw Medical Center\, and he’s served as an Orthopedic Trauma Fellow in Pittsburg\, PA. \nAs an orthopedic trauma surgeon\, he treats pelvis and upper/lower extremity fractures. “I chose trauma specifically due to the variety of cases\,” he said. “Usually when the bone breaks\, there are associated injuries with nearby muscles\, tendons\, ligaments\, etc.\, and my job is to repair all these components.” \nPart of the process in helping patients regain function requires listening to them\, Dr. Patel said. “The details of each patient’s story and circumstances are all important and can guide you toward the best treatment option. While Injuries can be similar\, every patient is unique and requires individualized care.” \nBeing a skilled surgeon is only part of the job\, as Dr. Patel sees it. He strives to be an advocate throughout the entire process. He treats patients as he would a family member\, sharing the process of deciding on treatment or intervention. “Orthopedics is a team sport – the physician\, patient\, nurses\, and therapists all work together towards a common goal\,” he said. In the end\, he hopes his patients will ask questions and ultimately be comfortable with their decision.

SUMMARY:Update on Management of Atrial Fibrillation
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access Webinar Link  \nUpdate on Management of Atrial Fibrillation \nPresented By: Gurudutt Kulkarni\, MD – Electrophysiology\, Beacon Health System and Adil Wani\, MD – Cardiology\, Interventional Cardiology\, Beacon Health System \n  \nDr. Kulkarni received his medical degree from Jawaharal Nehru Medical College and completed his internship and residency at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. He completed his cardiology fellowship and clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He is board-certified in internal medicine\, cardiovascular diseases and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.\nDr. Kulkarni is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology. \n  \n  \nDr. Adil S. Wani’s father\, uncle and late grandfather were all physicians\, but it wasn’t until high school that Dr. Wani decided on a career in medicine. “It was fascinating to me how the human body maintains homeostasis and small changes in this balance can lead to an illness. Preventing these small changes and improving an individual’s well-being would further lead to uplifting society. This has been my ultimate goal.”\nWhile there were many reasons to join the team\, Dr. Wani chose Beacon because he shares our mission and values. “Beacon and I share the same goal: To enhance the physical\, mental\, emotional and spiritual well-being of communities.”\nAs an interventional cardiologist\, Dr. Wani can deliver on that. “I treat individuals suffering from heart disorders. I consider the heart to be the center of the body. Any disturbance in the heart can cause a significant impact on one’s health. Prevention and treatment of a disease in such a vital organ and its impact on well-being led me to choose this specialty.”\nDr. Wani received his medical degree from the Government Medical College in Srinagar\, Jammu and Kashmir\, India. He completed his residency at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown\, Pennsylvania\, and Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship and was the Chief Fellow at Advocate Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin.\nThough interventional cardiology is his specialty\, Dr. Wani has another treatment strategy he uses with all patients. “Patients have taught me the power of listening. Listening to someone with undivided attention is one of the most profound healings one can provide another.”\nAnd because he listens to his patients\, Dr. Wani can keep the focus of his work where it matters: his patients. “My philosophy is to keep my treatment plan patient-centered\, simple and thorough.”

DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Access OnDemand Recording  \nClick HERE to Access CME Evaluation  \nThyroid Nodules \nPresented By: Andrea Gentile\, MD – Otolaryngology\, Beacon Health System \nDr. Andrea Gentile knew in high school that she wanted to inspire health. “I wanted a career that each day had new challenges\, where I could engage in problem solving with each individual case. I also wanted to be able to develop relationships with each patient and inspire them to choose lifestyles that are healthy and fulfilling.”\nAs an otolaryngology expert\, Dr. Gentile problem-solves every day. “I treat a variety of problems of the ears\, nose\, and throat both medically or surgically. I chose a career in ENT because of the interesting and complicated anatomy. Also\, while ENT is a surgical specialty\, there is a vast array of diverse conditions we get to treat and surgical procedures we can perform.”\nDr. Gentile received her bachelor of science in biology from the University of Kentucky before pursuing her doctorate in medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Gentile completed her residency in otolaryngology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She has joined Beacon Medical Group because “it was clear that the people in this system were very proud of what they do and showed that by working hard and providing the best care they can to their patients.”\nDr. Gentile’s trust and respect are reflected in her practice philosophy: “My philosophy on how to practice medicine is that it should be a team approach between myself and my patients.  Together we can come up with a plan on how to tackle any issue.  I believe it is my responsibility to fully educate my patients on their otolaryngology conditions and give them all the options on how to address that problem. However\, the final decision on how to proceed should be determined by the patient.” \nWhile Dr. Gentile hopes her patients learn that she is always on their side and will fight to give them the best care possible\, she has also learned from her patients. “My patients have taught me that each person and situation is unique\, and to truly care for them means to listen to their story and use what I have learned over the years to tailor the medicine to their needs.”
