Rockin’ Dr. Lum always goes the extra mile to help

Congratulations to Dr. Wen-Sun Lum, hospitalist at Memorial Hospital, for being a Doc Who Rocks!

A Rockin’ Doc is a physician who brings his or her best to Beacon Health System each day. Associates and colleagues nominated Dr. Lum for this distinction because he makes authentic and trustworthy personal connections to create moments that matter for patients, families and staff. Here are some of the reasons why Dr. Lum’s team members think he rocks:

• Dr. Lum is admired by staff and colleagues for always going above and beyond. He is intentional, dependable, honest, kind, generous, intelligent and humble.
• Every day, Dr. Lum takes extra time to offer superior, compassionate care and education to patients and their families. He spends generous amounts of time with them to help define quality of life and expectations for care. He is always willing to have difficult conversations in pursuit of doing what is best for the patient.
• It’s not unusual for Dr. Lum to revisit his patients after he has already seen them once for the day. He also makes it a point to sit at eye level with the family or patient – always! He has even resorted to sitting on footstools, if needed. He makes constant eye contact and doesn’t leave the room until all questions and concerns have been addressed.
• Dr. Lum impresses me daily because of his ability to see the big medical picture when taking care of the patient. He always goes the extra mile, even if that means he has to put in longer hours at the hospital to make sure his patients get what they need.
