Frequently Asked Questions

The doctor will first determine if the pain is originating from the joint or other locations. Pain from the joint is caused when any part of your joint is not working properly including ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone and synovial fluid. Sometimes a recent injury or over use can cause inflammation leading to joint pain. Typical wear and tear can lead to arthritis. Painful joints can be a symptom of an underlying problem.

  • Lifestyle modifications can help alleviate symptoms of arthritis. These include weight loss, avoiding activities such as running. Modifying exercise to no or low impact can reduce stress on your joints.
  • Exercise and physical therapy can help strengthen leg muscles and reduce pain. Exercises may include strengthening like riding a stationary bike or stretching exercises such as flexing the ankle, knee or hip up and down.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce swelling in the joints. These can be taken orally on a daily basis. A steroid can also be injected into the joint for more rapid relief.
  • Viscosupplementation is an injection of a gel like fluid containing hyaluronic acid into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the synovial fluid of the joint. People with arthritis can have a decreased supply of this fluid. The injection helps to replenish the low levels increasing the lubrication of the joint providing relief from the pain.
  • Glucosamine chondroitin is often used to supplement other treatments
  • Bracing may be a treatment option if determined appropriate by your doctor
  • Significant pain that persists despite medication and other conservative therapies.
  • You can no longer complete daily tasks without help decreasing your quality of life.
  • You have degenerative changes on xray and other signs of osteoarthritis
