Hip Care
At Beacon Health System, our orthopedic experts specialize in many types of hip care, including complex surgeries. Whether you need a doctor to find the cause of your hip pain or a specialist to perform joint replacement surgery on an injured joint, our team can help. We offer inpatient and outpatient care in convenient locations to serve you.
Causes of Hip Pain
There are many causes of hip pain. They include fractures, infection and disease. Age-related arthritis and other conditions can cause painful inflammation. This can lead to the gradual breakdown of bone and joint tissues. In other cases, hip pain is due to a broken bone from a fall or other accidental injury.
Osteoporosis and similar bone conditions can cause bone weakness and painful fractures that increase your risk of falling. Hip conditions, such as dysplasia (abnormally shallow bone socket) or loose bone and tissue fragments, can also cause soreness and swelling. Over time, these conditions wear down bones and joints causing intense pain. It can eventually become difficult to walk, sit or stand.
Nonsurgical Treatments
Your Beacon doctor will use tests and other procedures to evaluate the source of your hip pain. He or she will discuss whether nonsurgical treatment can help. Nonsurgical options include rest, medication, physical therapy and braces, canes or other walking aids.
Surgical Treatments
Disease or injury can cause a joint to break down, becoming extremely painful or even disabling. In these cases, surgery may help. Our doctors treat some conditions with minimally invasive surgery by inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter and microscopic instruments into your joint. This type of surgery can result in less discomfort and faster recovery.
For more complex conditions, hip replacement surgery may be necessary. Our surgeons repair, rebuild or replace injured joints, bone and connecting tissues. Hip replacement surgery can relieve pain and restore your ability to move freely. If you need joint surgery, you can recover in our dedicated patient units.
Hip Arthroscopy
Our doctors sometimes use hip arthroscopy to examine and treat joint tissues. Orthopedic surgeons insert an arthroscope – a small, lighted tube with a tiny camera – into your joint. This allows them to view, diagnose and treat hip damage. Doctors sometimes use other microscopic medical instruments during arthroscopy. They can use this less invasive approach to closely evaluate and treat certain hip conditions. For example, our surgeons can use hip arthroscopy to remove loose, floating pieces of joint tissue or repair tears and other injuries.
