Colon Cancer Care

What is Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last several inches of the colon. Together, they’re often referred to as colorectal cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both male and female Americans (excluding skin cancer).

Most cases of colon cancer begin as small clumps of cells called polyps. Over time some polyps become colon cancer. Many polyps produce few symptoms or no symptoms at all. That’s why it’s important to get regular screenings to help identify (and monitor) polyps before they become cancer.

Providers Treating Colon Cancer

A colonoscopy can save your life.

Whether you’re at increased risk for colon cancer, or it’s time for your routine screening ––don’t wait any longer.

Lifestyle factors may be linked to the development of colorectal cancer. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight. Risk of developing colorectal cancer is increased by being overweight/obese.
  • Physical Activity. Increased physical activity lowers the chance of developing colorectal cancer.
  • Smoking. Smokers are at an increased risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer than non-smokers.
  • Alcohol use. Development of colorectal cancer is linked to moderate/heavy alcohol use.

By making healthier lifestyle choices, the chances of developing colon cancer can be decreased. Learn More About Colon Cancer.
