Memorial Hospital of South Bend named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals®

Memorial Hospital of South Bend was named one of the nation’s 2026 Modern Healthcare 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® Powered by Premier — and the only hospital in northern Indiana to receive the distinction — based on an independent quality analysis using a balanced scorecard provided by Premier, Inc. and published by Modern Healthcare.

The 2026 Modern Healthcare 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list recognizes hospitals across the country that provide exceptional heart care. The list is based on a careful review of publicly available data from nearly 1,000 hospitals and reflects measurable performance, quality and outcomes. Hospitals cannot apply or pay to be included, making this distinction a meaningful, data‑driven way to highlight organizations that are helping improve heart care for patients and families nationwide.

“This is a proud moment for Beacon Health System and Memorial Hospital,” said Memorial Hospital President Larry Tracy. “It is a meaningful recognition of the many teams who support our cardiovascular program. Being named to the Modern Healthcare 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list highlights the collaborative effort required to deliver high‑quality, compassionate care to our cardiovascular patients.”

From a clinical perspective, the distinction reflects a sustained commitment to clinical quality and collaboration across the cardiovascular service line.

“Being named to the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list affirms our focus on quality, safety and outstanding patient care,” said Dr. Michelle Thompson, Memorial Hospital Vice President of Medical Affairs. “It’s a testament to the dedication of our cardiovascular teams and their shared commitment to advancing cardiac care through best practices and innovation.”

Physician leaders say the recognition also reflects the strength of Memorial Hospital’s multidisciplinary approach and its impact on patients and the broader community.

“I think we are all very excited to be recognized as a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital by Modern Healthcare,” said Dr. Daniel Weber, cardiothoracic surgeon at Beacon Medical Group Cardiothoracic Surgery South Bend. “To me, it demonstrates how well our hospital and cardiovascular program work seamlessly as a team. We truly have a collaborative group across multiple departments and specialties, all focused on excellent outcomes and giving our patients the best care possible. This recognition isn’t just a title — it reflects the impact we are having on our patients and on this community.”

That shared focus on collaboration and community impact is echoed across the hospital’s cardiovascular service program.

“Our team is very grateful to receive this award,” said Dr. Mayank Mittal, interventional and nuclear cardiologist at Beacon Medical Group Advanced Cardiology Specialists South Bend. “This recognition affirms our service line’s commitment to advancing cardiovascular care through collaboration and an unwavering focus on the patients and community we serve.”

Performance of hospitals recognized on the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list

Compared to peer hospitals, those in the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals delivered better results across all 21 measures, including clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, extended outcomes and patient experience.

National findings show that hospitals recognized for excellence in heart care achieve better results for patients. These organizations see fewer complications, lower death rates, and more efficient care—especially for complex heart procedures such as bypass surgery, cardiac interventions, and heart failure treatment. Together, these outcomes highlight how high‑quality care can lead to safer procedures, better recovery, and greater value for patients and families.

These outcomes add up to meaningful differences. According to the study’s analysis, if all U.S. hospitals’ cardiovascular service lines performed at the level of this year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, the impact could include over 14,000 additional lives potentially saved, more than 27,000 additional bypass and angioplasty patients experiencing fewer complications, and over $2.0 billion in potential savings.

“Cardiovascular care is one of the most complex and impactful service lines in healthcare,” said David Zito, President of Performance Services at Premier. “The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals program highlights organizations delivering strong outcomes while providing hospital leaders with meaningful benchmarks to help improve care.”
