Transferring a patient to Beacon Health System

Beacon Health System’s Transfer Center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to coordinate interfacility transfers for patients needing specialized care. Our experienced nurses will work closely with the patient’s physician at the transferring facility to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer process.

To initiate a patient transfer, call our Transfer Center at  866.262.4247. Our team will evaluate transfer requests based on the patient’s clinical urgency and the availability of resources at Beacon Health System.

What you can expect from Beacon Health System’s Transfer Center

When you call us, you will speak directly to an experienced nurse who will initiate the patient transfer process. As part of this process, you can expect the following:

  • A request to speak with a medical staff member caring for the patient
  • Direct conversation with an attending physician at Beacon Health System
  • Thorough evaluation of your transfer request
  • Collection of appropriate clinical information from the transferring facility
  • Periodic updates on the patient’s transfer status.

We will ask for the following details to transfer a patient:

  • patient’s full name,
  • date of birth,
  • where the patient is located,
  • contact phone number,
  • diagnosis, and
  • contact information for the patient’s current treating provider.

Transferring high-risk mothers and babies

Beacon Health System has a team of experienced maternal-fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists available to consult with referring physicians on the care of high-risk mothers and babies.

To transfer an obstetrics patient to Beacon Health System, call our Transfer Center at  866.262.4247 and ask for a maternal-fetal medicine specialist for a consultation.

NICU Care at Beacon Health System:

Beacon Health System is dedicated to providing the highest level of care for premature and critically ill newborns in our state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our NICU is staffed by board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, and specially trained nurses who provide around-the-clock care for our tiniest patients.

Our NICU has the latest technology and equipment to provide advanced care for premature babies, infants with congenital anomalies, and other critically ill newborns. We offer a range of services and treatments to meet the individual needs of each baby, including respiratory support, neonatal surgery, and nutritional support.

At Beacon Health System, we understand that having a baby in the NICU can be a stressful and emotional experience for families. That’s why we provide family centered care, which includes open visitation, family education and support services. In addition, we encourage parents to be actively involved in their baby’s care and work closely with them to create a care plan that meets their unique needs.

Our NICU team also works closely with our obstetricians and perinatologists to provide seamless care for high-risk pregnancies and prepare to maintain premature and critically ill newborns before they are born.

To transfer a critically ill neonatal patient, call our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at 800.477.1547 and ask for a neonatologist for a consultation.

Transferring patients with neurological emergencies

Beacon Health System offers referring physicians phone consultations and assistance with transfers from an attending neurologist or neurosurgeon 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Neurological emergencies include stroke, seizures, central nervous system infections, brain and spine trauma, and neuromuscular weakness. Beacon is the only thrombectomy-capable facility in Northern Indiana.

If you are a referring physician, you can contact our Transfer Center at 866.262.4247 to transfer a patient with a neurological emergency.

Trauma services at Beacon Health System

Beacon Health System is proud to be a Level II Trauma Center recognized by the American College of Surgeons. Our Trauma Center provides specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries, including those caused by accidents, falls and violent acts.

Our team of trauma specialists includes the following:

  • Board-certified trauma surgeons
  • Board-certified emergency medicine physicians
  • Critical care nurses
  • Other health care professionals work together to provide our patients with the highest level of care.

Our trauma team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to respond to any emergency and provide prompt and expert care.

As a Level II Trauma Center, we have the resources and expertise to provide advanced trauma care, including:

  • Trauma surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Interventional radiology
  • Vascular surgery
  • Critical care services
  • Neurological emergencies, including hemorrhagic and thrombotic strokes, brain and spine trauma, seizures, and other conditions requiring board certified neurologists and neurosurgeons

Our Trauma Center supports patients and their families, including counseling and rehabilitation services.

STEMI Care at Beacon Health System

Beacon Health System is committed to providing the highest level of care for patients experiencing an ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), a type of heart attack that requires urgent treatment.

Our Chest Pain Center is recognized by the American College of Cardiology as an Accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) and Resuscitation. Our team of highly trained and experienced cardiovascular specialists, including interventional cardiologists, cardiac electrophysiologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons, work together to provide rapid and effective treatment for STEMI patients.

At Beacon Health System, we use the latest technology and techniques to quickly and accurately diagnose STEMI, including 24/7 availability of cardiac catheterization labs. In addition, our goal is to restore blood flow to the heart muscle as soon as possible, which is critical for minimizing heart damage and improving patient outcomes.

In addition to providing expert medical care, our Chest Pain Center offers a comprehensive program of cardiac rehabilitation and patient education designed to help patients recover from their heart attacks and reduce their risk of future cardiac events.

Medical Transport Services at Beacon Health System

At Beacon Health System, we understand that time is of the essence when it comes to critical medical emergencies. Therefore, we offer medical transport services, including a medical helicopter and critical care ground ambulance, to transport patients quickly and safely.

Our medical helicopter, MedFlight, is equipped with advanced medical equipment and staffed by highly trained flight nurses and flight paramedics who provide critical care in-flight. MedFlight is available 24/7 and can transport patients to any hospital within a 150-mile radius of our service area.

Our critical care ground ambulance, Beacon Health Transport, is also staffed by highly trained nurses and paramedics who provide advanced life support during transport to Beacon facilities. In addition, Beacon Health Transport is equipped with the latest technology and equipment to ensure the safest and most efficient transport possible. 

Our medical transport team works closely with our emergency department, critical care units and other medical providers to provide seamless care for patients who require medical transport via MedFlight or ground ambulance. Our team is dedicated to providing the highest level of care and compassion during stressful and critical times for patients and their families.
