Description

Inward curving of the spine in the neck and lower back.

Overview

With lordosis, typical amounts of inward curving of the spine help the body stay upright without overusing muscles. But too much curving in the neck or lower back can push posture out of alignment.

Symptoms

Depending on the amount and location of increased curving, lordosis can cause the shoulders to sag, the chin to poke forward, the low back to arch forward too much or the buttocks to look more prominent.

Treatments

Lordosis treatment depends on the extent and location of increased curving. If treatment is needed, options may include pain relievers sold without a prescription, physical therapy, a brace or surgery.
