When everyday worry becomes something more

We all deal with stress, whether it’s deadlines, traffic or any number of curveballs that come along. It’s part of everyday life. But how do you know when normal stress crosses the line into something more serious, like anxiety?

According to Judith Philip, MD, family medicine physician at Beacon Medical Group WaNee, the difference lies in how much it affects your ability to function. “Stress is a natural part of everyone’s daily lives,” she explained. “However, when it intensifies into anxiety many people cannot function.”

Stress vs. anxiety: What’s the difference?
Stress is usually temporary and tied to a specific situation. You might feel tense before a big presentation or frustrated when juggling a busy schedule. But you can still get through your day.

In today’s fast-paced world, stress is nearly unavoidable. A certain amount of stress can be beneficial — it motivates us to perform, adapt and grow. But when that stress becomes chronic or unmanaged, it can tip into anxiety.

Anxiety is when your body’s stress response does not turn off. It can interfere with your focus, memory and motivation. The deepest effect of anxiety is that it separates us from peace. It convinces the body that danger is everywhere.

When should you seek help?
If anxiety starts interfering with your daily life, it’s time to reach out for support. Dr. Philip suggests watching for signs like:

  • Constant worry
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Avoiding places or activities you used to enjoy
  • Struggling to keep up with daily routines like cleaning or organizing

“When anxiety starts interfering with your daily routine or keeps you from doing the things your normally enjoy, it’s time to reach out for help,” she said.

Can your primary care provider help?
Yes, your primary care provider can be a great first step in getting help and support for anxiety. While some individuals may need a referral to a specialist, primary care providers are equipped to begin treatment and guide you toward additional resources.

Bottom line
If anxiety is holding your back from living fully, don’t wait. Talk to your primary care provider. Help is available, and you don’t have to face it alone.
