Self-care tips for staying bright and balanced this holiday season
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and togetherness but it can also bring stress, packed schedules and high expectations. Amid the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to forget the importance of caring for yourself.
Family medicine Nurse Practitioner Cara Johnson from Beacon Medical Group Mishawaka Primary Plus reminds us that self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential. From managing sleep and staying active to enjoying holiday meals without guilt, Cara shares practical tips to help you slow down, savor the season and give yourself grace.
Q: How can patients set realistic expectations for the holidays?
A: The holidays can be a very overwhelming time filled with stress, anticipation, expectations and pressure to make everything “just perfect.” It’s during this time that I recommend slowing down, remembering what the season really is about, and setting realistic expectations for how the season will go. Remember, not everything will go perfectly, and we can’t prevent unexpected incidents, but that’s OKAY. Focus on what you can control and let the things you can’t control go.
Q: Why is protecting sleep important during this season, and what’s one practical tip?
A: Sleep is important for your overall medical and physical health all year, but especially during the holidays. Our bodies are more stressed/fatigued during the holiday season and those darn winter bugs are in high gear. I recommend starting your holiday preparations early so you don’t have late nights of cramming in wrapping, shopping, decorating, cooking or baking. Keep your sleep schedule as close to normal as you can, even when out of town visiting family or trying to catch up on last-minute holiday tasks. Listen to your body: If you’re tired, go to bed early!
Q: What advice do you give about enjoying holiday meals without guilt?
A: The holidays can be a tough time for those of us trying to watch our waistlines. Don’t fall into the trap of “well, it’s only once a year,” and end up with extra weight that’s hard to get rid of. Instead, enjoy your holiday favorites, but do it in moderation. You can also substitute healthier ingredients when you bake and share the treats so you aren’t tempted with too many leftovers. I find myself giving a lot of cookies out to friends and family after my annual bake day so I’m not tempted to eat them all myself.
Q: How can patients fit movement into busy holiday schedules?
A: During the holidays it can be difficult to stick to workout routines due to busy schedules, illness and road conditions. I recommend shooting for at least 15 minutes of activity a day, and try to plan your week ahead to allot time for physical activity. With all the snow recently, getting out and shoveling does count for some quality physical activity as well. Just remember to be safe and don’t overdo it!
Q: What’s your best advice for managing a packed calendar?
A: I have my family monthly calendar on my phone which, when looking at it, can be quite overwhelming. I just remind myself that you have to take things a day at a time. Additionally, I remember not to overbook myself and to give myself flexibility in making adjustments. Flexibility is key! Remember, you can’t do it all, and you sometimes need to decide what is necessary and what can wait. It’s impossible to please everybody.
