Frequently asked questions

What is a Registered Dietitian?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) are the most qualified, credentialed healthcare providers who specialize in providing medical nutrition therapy. The RDN credential ensures that dietitians are equipped to provide evidence-based nutrition intervention, individualized counseling, and compassionate care. RDNs have extensive training and education, are registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and often hold advanced educational degrees and certifications in their area of practice.

Does my insurance plan have a benefit to see a registered dietitian?

Insurance benefits vary significantly. We encourage you to call your insurance company prior to your visit to verify your benefits. Medicare Part B reimburses for visits with an RDN if you are referred for the treatment of diabetes (Type I and Type II) and/or non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (Stages I-IV) for a designated number of visits per year.

How do I schedule a dietitian appointment?

If you are pursuing bariatric surgery at the Beacon Kalamazoo Bariatric Center, you will be scheduled to see a dietitian following your initial appointment with the surgeon. To participate in other services that the dietitians offer at Beacon Kalamazoo, please request a referral from your primary care provider or a referral from your bariatric surgery provider for the Back-On-Track program. After receiving your referral, our office will contact you to schedule an appointment.
