Sun safety: Protecting your skin during camping season

Time in the sun is part of nearly every summer activity, but too much exposure can lead to more than just a temporary burn.

Jaclyn Stoddard, PA-C

“Sunburns are very common this time of year, especially for kids who are outside for long stretches,” said Jaclyn Stoddard, PA-C, family medicine physician assistant at Beacon Kalamazoo Immediate Care Woodbridge Hills Portage.

Even on cloudy days, UV exposure can still affect the skin. Areas like the ears, neck and tops of feet are often missed during sunscreen application.

Reapplying sunscreen every two hours and more often when swimming is key.

For teens and older kids, convenience matters. “Spray sunscreens and easy-to-carry options can make a big difference in how often they actually reapply,” Jaclyn said.

Sun protection goes beyond sunscreen. Hats, protective clothing and time in the shade all help reduce exposure.

Mild sunburns can usually be treated at home, but more severe burns, especially those with blistering or significant pain, may require medical attention.
