Description

Physical discomfort in the ankle area, often including the joint or the tendon that connects the lower leg to the heel, called the Achilles tendon.

Self-care

Rest the ankle, and elevate it when possible. Apply ice pack up to 20 minutes, three times a day, and wrap the ankle with a compression bandage. Pain medicines you can get without a prescription may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional immediately for:

  • Obvious injury.
  • Serious pain or swelling.
  • Signs of infection, such as fever.
  • Trouble walking or putting weight on the ankle.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • Swelling doesn't improve within five days.
  • Pain lasts for a few weeks.
  • Pain limits ability to work, walk or complete daily tasks.
