Description

A rare and serious condition in which the body stops making enough new blood cells.

Overview

Aplastic anemia develops as a result of bone marrow damage. It can develop at any age. The damage may be present at birth or happen after exposure to radiation, chemotherapy, toxic chemicals, some drugs or infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms may develop slowly or suddenly. Fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, frequent infections and bleeding may occur.

Treatments

If necessary, treatment can include medicines, blood transfusions or a stem cell transplant, also known as a bone marrow transplant.
