Overview
Corticobasal degeneration, also called corticobasal syndrome, most commonly is caused by a buildup of a protein called tau in brain cells. The buildup of tau can cause the cells to break down.
Symptoms
Corticobasal degeneration symptoms include trouble moving, stiffness and postures that can't be controlled, such as forming a fist. People with the disease may have trouble with thinking, speech and language. Symptoms get worse over 6 to 8 years.
Treatment
There are no treatments that slow the progression of corticobasal degeneration. Medicines may help manage symptoms. Occupational, physical or speech therapy also may help.
