Overview
Gout is a common form of arthritis caused by too much uric acid in the blood. The acid builds up and forms crystals in joints.
Symptoms
Symptoms include intense pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in joints. Redness may be harder to see on Black or brown skin. Attacks come on suddenly, often at night, and most often affect the big toe.
Treatments
Medicines to lessen the pain of attacks, medicines to block or remove uric acid, and diet changes can help manage gout.
