Home Health Library Topics Morton neuroma

Description

Damage to a nerve that causes pain in the bottom of the forefoot.

Overview

Morton neuroma may be caused by pressure on the affected nerve. High-heeled and narrow shoes usually worsen symptoms.

Symptoms

Morton neuroma causes a sharp, burning pain in the bottom of the forefoot, usually behind the third and fourth toes. The nearby toes may have pain, tingling or numbness.

Treatments

Treatment starts with wearing low-heeled shoes with wide toe boxes and using inserts that cushion the forefoot. Ice packs and nonprescription pain medicine may relieve pain. Other treatments include corticosteroid shots and surgery.
