A common wrist fracture.
A scaphoid fracture is a common wrist fracture of the bone, called a scaphoid, that's below the thumb. It can break when someone uses an open palm to stop a fall. It's more common in people who play sports.
Symptoms of a scaphoid fracture include pain and swelling that last more than a day.
Scaphoid fractures are usually treated with a cast. Sometimes, surgery is needed.
