Making Beacon the Employer of Choice

bhs-logo It’s not good enough for Beacon Health System to be just a good place to work. Everyone would agree that we want our workplace to be great, a place where we feel appreciated, respected and part of the team.

Over the past year, in response to associate engagement surveys, Beacon has been doing a lot of things to let associates know they are valued, and that we can accomplish great things by working together.

Based on the feedback from the engagement surveys, Beacon leaders have been undertaking a variety of programs and initiatives aimed at improving communication among associates, better recognizing associates for their outstanding contributions, enhancing an atmosphere of teamwork and offering more support (training, equipment) to managers and associates. The next associate engagement survey begins on September 22.  Thank you to all associates for sharing your valuable survey feedback that is helping to make Beacon the employer of choice.

Just exactly what has been done thanks to feedback from associates like yourself? Probably more than you thought.

Training was made available to managers to better handle abusive behaviors in the workplace. Developed a Dignity and Respect campaign highlighted by inspirational quotes placed at Memorial (and Elkhart General soon); informational tips about respect and kindness emailed house-wide.

Communication & Input

“My manager communicates messages that my coworkers need to hear, even when the information is unpleasant.”

Managers were offered training on crucial conversations and other communication skills to help them better inform their staff about goals, financial conditions and new developments within Beacon. Managers attend “retreats” that equip them with tools to enhance communication among associates.

“I am kept informed of the organization’s future plans and direction.”

Implemented communication best practices observed during site visits at other hospitals, including holding more regular department meetings.

Leadership Connection Day allows not only directors and managers to attend, but associate leaders as well.

“My ideas and suggestions are valued by my organization.”

Mimicking the program Elkhart General program has in place, Memorial began offering a regular meal program, “Owl’s Hours,” to night shift associates.
