Litwillers find volunteering rewarding

Karen and Dick Litwiller are one of Elkhart General’s husband-and-wife Redcoat volunteer teams.

“I enjoy helping people and encouraging them,” Karen says. “Being a Redcoat gives me many opportunities to brighten someone’s day. I have been told many times by the patients that they really appreciate us helping them, and if we didn’t help them, they’d have a very hard time getting to their doctor to just visiting a loved one.

“That makes it worth it all to me.”

Her husband of 55 years agrees.

“As a volunteer at Elkhart General Hospital, I am aware of the needs of others and find it rewarding to know you are helping them,” Dick says.
“When you’re volunteering, you’re giving of your time. Your pay is a kind word of appreciation or a ‘thank you’ from those you meet.”
