Her lifelong wish came true at Elkhart

As a young girl, Jan Chupp wanted to be a candy striper. But she lived too far away from the hospital.

But fast forward over the years and you’ll see she never lost that desire. It eventually led to her Elkhart General Hospital.

“When I retired, I decided to volunteer at the hospital and have really enjoyed it,” Jan says. “I enjoy being around people and helping them. It also makes me feel like I am needed. May times, nurses have thanked me for volunteering.”

It might not surprise you to learn that Jan’s passion prompted her husband, Del, to volunteer, too.

“My wife got me involved. She volunteers in the gift shop on Wednesdays and heard there was an opening for a Redcoat volunteer on Wednesdays,” he says.

“Most people we interact with are so very thankful for our help. I enjoy talking with people, and when I am not volunteering at the hospital, I like to shoot the breeze with some friends,” Del adds. “Volunteering lets me talk with a lot of people and help them get around the hospital.”
