Memorial MedFlight recognized in Congressional Record for 20 years of lifesaving service
Flight crew members also received commemorative challenge coins to mark the special occasion.
“Oftentimes in Indiana, you can find yourself maybe a half hour, a 45-minute or even an hour drive from a top tier trauma center,” Yakym said. “Those are moments when seconds matter when you’re in need of those types of services. We’re fortunate to have the Memorial MedFlight team standing by 24/7 ready to fly this helicopter at a moment’s notice to take care of people.”
Memorial MedFlight has played a vital role in supporting the Level II Trauma Center at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, providing exceptional care during both emergency scene responses and inter-facility transfers.
Two decades of air service would not have been possible without the incredible people behind the mission, including Beacon Health System leadership, maintenance teams, pilots, emergency medical service partners and hospital staff who have supported the mission. MedFlight has partnered with Air Methods, the leading provider of air medical transport services, since May 2025.
U.S. Rep. Yakym’s Congressional Record entry reads:
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the important milestone for our region. On Jan. 1, 2026, Memorial MedFlight celebrated its 20th anniversary of service to the people of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. For two decades, Memorial MedFlight has provided lifesaving medical air support to our communities, often responding in the most critical moments when every second matters.
“Their pilots, flight nurses, paramedics and support teams have demonstrated extraordinary skill, professionalism and courage, day and night, and in all weather conditions. Thousands of families across our region have been touched by the fast, expert care this team delivers. Their work has strengthened our emergency response system, expanded access to advanced medical care and saved countless lives.
“Today we honor Memorial MedFlight’s dedication, their unwavering commitment to the people they serve and the strong partnerships they have built with hospitals, first responders and local communities. We celebrate 20 years of excellence, and we express our deepest gratitude for the lives they have protected, and hope that they will continue to protect and provide for. Congratulations to Memorial MedFlight on this remarkable anniversary, and thank you for your continued service.”
