Legendary rock band Chicago visits Beacon Children’s Hospital, donates activity boxes to young patients

Legendary rock band Chicago brought more than music to Beacon Children’s Hospital last month — band members delivered superhero-sized joy to young patients ahead of two local performances, including at the University of Notre Dame.

In a heartwarming gesture, the band visited with families, patients and staff, distributing Characters of Character activity boxes to provide pediatric patients comfort and a distraction during what is often an overwhelming time.

The generous donation of hundreds of boxes — sponsored by Chicago through non-profit Characters of Character — ensures the band’s positive impact continues long after their visit.

The boxes contain crayons, water colors, an activity book and a confidence-building superhero mask.

Chicago’s multigenerational appeal shone bright as parents and staff shared stories of how the band’s music has touched their lives.

And it was clear how meeting Beacon’s youngest patients touched the hearts of band members.

“We’re so blessed that it means so much to so many people,” said Jimmy Pankow, trombonist and original band member, who was visibly moved during his first-ever NICU visit.

The way Pankow connected with parents and their tiny babies revealed the genuine heart behind the band.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have them joining us,” said Jen Tonkovich, Director of Women and Children’s Services at Beacon Children’s Hospital.

Watch the band’s recently released official video of their heartwarming visit.
