Eye on Health: Pay attention to your body for cancer warning signs
Mike Coryn never imagined that a few everyday aches or his constant tiredness would lead to a cancer diagnosis. But eventually he met with doctors at Beacon for answers. When his wife told him the doctor had called with the results, the shock was so intense he dropped to his knees. He soon learned he had multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that often hides behind symptoms people overlook.
Looking back, Mike says the signs were there. Doctors say symptoms like extreme fatigue, bone pain, high calcium levels and unexplained fractures should never be ignored because early detection makes treatment far more effective.
During June’s Men’s Health Month, Mike and his oncologist Hafiz Aslam, MD, want others to pay closer attention to their bodies and keep up with routine screenings. Mike credits his Beacon medical team and his wife Lou for helping him through treatment, and he hopes his experience encourages others to speak up when something feels off.
