Why would I see a counselor or psychologist online?

One in four Americans is affected by emotional distress at some time in life, but only one in eight seeks care. From chronic concerns such as depression and anxiety, to recent stress caused by events such as grief, divorce, parenthood, or other major life changes, online counseling allows for reliable and convenient visits with licensed and highly trained counselors or psychologists.

Here are a few reasons people go online to see a counselor or psychologist:

  • I feel like I should probably see a counselor, but can’t really fit it into my over-booked schedule.
  • I am experiencing stress at work and need someone to talk to.
  • I am having relationship problems and don’t know where to go from here.
  • I don’t know why I am feeling so sad.
  • I just need someone to talk to.
  • There aren’t many counselors or psychologists in my area.
  • I’m not sure if a counselor or psychologist could help me with my anxiety or not.
  • My counselor or psychologist is on maternity leave and I don’t want to go to a clinic.
  • I just moved and don’t know any counselor or psychologist in my area.
  • I just need a second opinion.

Beacon Connected Care is not for emergency medical problems; call 911 or go to your closest emergency room.

Who are the counselors and psychologists?

The online counseling services provided by Beacon Connected Care are provided by a network of licensed, doctoral level psychologists and master’s level counselors. Each is licensed to practice in their state, and trained in prevention and treatment techniques via telehealth.

Is my online counseling visit private and secure?

Yes, we feel it is of utmost importance to maintain patient privacy and keep information secure. Beacon Connected Care is designed to be a private, secure, HIPAA-compliant tool that allows you to safely and confidentially consult with a counselor or psychologist online.

Are the online counseling sessions recorded?

No, to ensure privacy and security of data, Beacon Connected Care counseling sessions are neither recorded nor stored.

What is an online counseling session like?

An online counseling session is essentially the same as an office visit but it is from the convenience of the location of your choosing. You will be asked about your current emotional symptoms, potential factors contributing to these symptoms, your history and what you would like to be accomplished in counseling. Using all of this information your counselor or psychologist will come up with a thorough assessment and treatment plan recommendations. This will be an ongoing conversation and can change if your needs change over time.

Can I see a counselor or psychologist online if I am traveling or in another state?

No. Currently Beacon Connected Care is only available in Indiana and Michigan.

Can I see a counselor or psychologist if I’m traveling outside of the United States?

While we hope to soon be available internationally, we currently only operate in the United States.

Can my kids see a counselor or psychologist on Beacon Connected Care?

Yes, we have counselors and psychologists who are trained and experienced in treating children ages 10-17 with parental or guardian consent. As with the urgent care practice, the parent or guardian needs to add a sub-account to their own account to make an appointment for the child.

Can a counselor or psychologist on Beacon Connected Care prescribe medication?

None of our counselors or psychologists prescribe medication. In practice, they are there to listen, understand your situation, identify more effective coping strategies and help you through difficult stages of life. However, physicians on our system can prescribe most psychiatric medications for patients seen on our system.

Will my primary care provider be notified about my online counseling visit?

You have the option to share the session notes with your primary care provider. You will be asked if you want a copy of your after-visit summary to be shared with your primary care provider. You can also print the notes and save them for your own file or share with other healthcare professionals. You may also decide not to share this information. The choice is yours.

What if I don’t like my counselor or psychologist?

Entering counseling is a big step in caring for yourself, and your relationship with your counselor or psychologist is an important part of your success in treatment. Do not be hesitant to interview more than one counselor or psychologist to find the one that has the experience, qualifications, and professional skills that allows you to be the best you can be. A good counselor or psychologist will respect your choice to do so.
