Overview
In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks its own tissue. It most often starts in the hands and feet. The condition also may damage other parts of the body, including skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.
Symptoms
It affects joint linings, causing painful swelling. This may lead to bones breaking down and joints bending out of shape. Tiredness, fever and not wanting to eat also can be symptoms.
Treatments
Medicines, physical therapy, and surgery aim to control symptoms and prevent joint damage.
