Home Health Library Topics Repetitive strain injury

Overview

Repeating a movement over and over can injure muscles; nerves; tissues that connect bones to bone, also known as ligaments; and cords that connect muscles to bone, also known as tendons. These types of injuries are usually caused by doing too much or using poor form. They're more common with age.

Symptoms

Symptoms can include pain, tenderness, swelling or stiffness in the affected area.

Treatments

Rest, pain medicines, physical therapy and possibly surgery can help heal a repetitive strain injury. Improving form might help prevent re-injury.
