Preparing the Next Generation of Medical Leaders
Because of our commitment to advancing education efforts in the region, particularly in the field of biomedical science, Beacon presented a $150,000 grant to northern Indiana high schools to implement biomedical science education. Project Lead The Way, the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, and Beacon are partnering in connection with a five-county regional initiative with the Corporate Partnership for Economic Growth. The partnership will give more Elkhart and St. Joseph County high school students access to courses in the biomedical sciences, preparing them for careers like those in the health care industry.
“We are pleased to be able to support so many schools that are providing education in the biomedical sciences, and look forward to many of these graduates staying in our region with high-paying careers,” says Phil Newbold, CEO of Beacon.
Why is this project important? STEM jobs are growing at a rate of 18 percent, nearly twice the rate of other fields. In Indiana, 123,000 new STEM jobs will exist by 2018, the majority of which will be computer and mathematical scientists, engineers and engineering technicians.
