Navigators Inspire Hope

Many of the uninsured across the country are counting on the expertise of professionals to help get them signed up for health insurance. This committed group of people on the front lines are health insurance marketplace navigators.

They are compassionate, knowledgeable health professionals who help guide the uninsured through the eligibility requirements for tax credits, as well as the enrollment process for health plans. By providing education assistance at no charge, people are empowered to choose the right health plan to meet their family’s needs.

In fall 2013, Beacon assembled a team of navigators (trained and certified) to meet the marketplace enrollment requirements of our local community. The navigators were strategically selected to meet the consumer at various points of access in the health system: physician practices, Admitting and Registration, Billing, Leighton Center, Health Discovery Center and Community Outreach. Assistance in both English and Spanish was available.

But they went further, and gave it their best. Working through an enrollment period that was extended due to website challenges, paper enrollment forms and long waits for phone assistance, the navigators fulfilled every request for information and assistance, whether in hospital lobbies, libraries, at civic meetings and churches.

“The navigators have done an outstanding job in assisting hundreds of applicants get enrolled, some attaining insurance for the first time,” says Diane Maas, Beacon Vice President of Managed Care and Business Development. “We are grateful for the navigators’ commitment to guiding people to much-needed health insurance.”

Eight million people were enrolled, including 132,000 Hoosiers, during the first period. That means many more people in our area now have health insurance, perhaps for the first time. And with health care benefits they never had before, Beacon is helping to build a healthier community.

Do you know someone who would like to sign up for health insurance?
