Dr. Reid Honored for Exceptional Care

ftt2-reidThomas Reid III, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, was the recipient of the 2014 Night of the Stars Hope Award from the American Cancer Society for giving hope to cancer patients and survivors through his outstanding commitment to care. Night of the Stars is an annual event to honor extraordinary individuals from our community who give of themselves through time and effort to fight the battle against cancer.

Under the medical direction and vision of Dr. Reid, Memorial Regional Cancer Center has brought cutting edge treatments (e.g. breast cancer and prostate cancer vaccine clinical trials) and survivorship advances for the care of patients; affiliated with the Mayo Clinic; and become a major oncology program in the region. These achievements, he says, would not be possible without the complete support of outstanding Memorial Regional Cancer Center radiation and medical oncology colleagues, nurses, medical and clerical assistants and Administration.

Josh Kellems of the American Cancer Society nominated Dr. Reid. Josh wrote, “Shortly after joining Memorial, Dr. Reid shared a vision for a cancer survivorship care plan that was truly integrated, multidisciplinary and totally patient-centered. Even though Dr. Reid’s caseload is increasing, he still finds time to give a great deal of his time to his patients.”

Other comments in support of Dr. Reid’s nomination came from Memorial’s cancer care team:

“Dr. Reid has bridged all aspects of the cancer program, so that we function as a true cancer “center,” strong, integrated and collaborative at all levels and all locations.”

“He is personally devoted to our patients, staff and our program.”

“We are a team and function that way because of the leadership, focus and forward thinking that he displays.”

“He has changed and elevated the level of cancer care in our community by treating patients as special individuals, not just a diagnosis; by being innovative in his approach to the total care of the patient; by reaching out to the primary care physicians and specialists in our community so as to challenge and enhance their thinking regarding cancer and cancer care within their own practices and with their own patients; and by challenging us to go beyond our best as we provide care to our patients.”

Congratulations to Dr. Reid on this prestigious award that honors his leadership in transforming the level of cancer care at Memorial Regional Cancer Center.
