Thursdays with Jeanne

In the late 1960s, Jeanne Mayer’s in-laws in Elkhart were visited often by strangers. It wasn’t long before these strangers became more like friends.

It turns out these kindly visitors were part of the Meals on Wheels program in Elkhart. For almost 50 years, Elkhart General Hospital has teamed up with Meals on Wheels, preparing nutritious meals to homebound seniors, five days a week for dozens of people. And for just about the same amount of time – 46 years – Jeanne has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels.

“In watching Meals on Wheels deliver food to my in-laws, I could see what a great service it was,” explains Jeanne.

A spry 83, Jeanne has been volunteering just about every week for more than four decades. She has assisted with every aspect of Meals on Wheels, including office work, delivery and packaging food.

While not the most glamorous work, Jeanne finds the work rewarding because it provides healthy meals for seniors and keeps them living in their homes longer. “I’ve met so many nice people over the years and you realize you’re helping so many people.”

Elkhart General staff, especially Robin Richard, Coordinator of Meals on Wheels, is appreciative of Jeanne’s dedication to the program. “It’s amazing – volunteering for as long as she has is quite a commitment,” says Robin. Jeanne was honored for long-time dedication at a luncheon in May.

For this mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, volunteering with Meals on Wheels runs deep in her blood. “If I didn’t do this, I wouldn’t know what to do with my Thursdays.”
