Patterson named new Beacon Medical Group President

Beacon Health System today announced that Dale A. Patterson, MD, MS, FAAFP, has been named President of Beacon Medical Group. Dr. Patterson, who has served in various clinical leadership roles with the healthcare organization for the past 15 years, will assume the role in January 2023.

Dr. Patterson is currently Vice President Medical Affairs at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. During the pandemic, he has served as Chair of the Beacon COVID Task Force and on the COVID-19 Response | Unified Command of the St. Joseph County Health Department. Dr. Patterson is also a Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

As President of Beacon Medical Group, Dr. Patterson will be responsible for more than 440 physicians and advanced practice clinicians who are committed to delivering outstanding care across our communities. He succeeds Vincent C. Henderson, MD, who is retiring.

Dr. Patterson received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 from the University of Michigan and his Doctorate of Medicine from Michigan State University in 1997. After completing his Memorial Family Medicine Residency in South Bend, where he served as Chief Resident, he took a fellowship at the National Institute for Program Director Development in Leawood, Kansas.

He served as a Faculty Physician for the United States Air Force during active duty from 2000 to 2003. Dr. Patterson returned to South Bend in 2007 as Associate Director of the Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency program. He served as Executive Director of the program from 2010 to 2018.

Dr. Patterson, who is board-certified in Family Medicine and licensed in Indiana and Michigan, earned a Master of Science degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety from Northwestern University in 2020.

“After extensive review, Dr. Patterson is the best candidate to serve Beacon Medical Group,” said Dr. Sam El-Dalati, Chief Clinical Officer at Beacon. “His previous roles have given him significant experience in both ambulatory and specialty physician relationships, and his effective leadership of the COVID Task Force has allowed him to create and strengthen relationships across the health system. Dr. Patterson’s passion for quality improvement and practice transformation will be essential for Beacon Medical Group moving forward.”

Dr. Patterson and his wife, Amy, have two adult children and a German Shorthair Pointer. A triathlete and an avid runner who has run the Boston Marathon six times, Dr. Patterson recently qualified for USAT Age Group National Championship triathlon next summer in Milwaukee.

“As we saw during the pandemic, Dr. Patterson’s calm, steadfast, informed approach served our associates, our patients and our community well,” said Kreg Gruber, Beacon CEO. “With the ever-changing challenges in healthcare delivery, Dr. Patterson’s leadership will be important to our organization’s success. I look forward to having him be a part of our Executive Leadership Team for Beacon Health System.”
