Beacon Kalamazoo offers next-generation robotic surgery with greater precision and control

Thanks to the generosity of local donors, Beacon Kalamazoo is the first hospital in the region to offer the next generation da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system. The new system builds on existing robotic capabilities with enhanced precision, improved visualization and advanced technologies designed to support better patient outcomes and greater efficiency in the operating room.

More precision during surgery

The da Vinci 5 system features several new capabilities that can enhance precision in the operating room. One of the system’s key advancements is force feedback technology, which gives surgeons a sense of how much pressure they are applying during a procedure. This added awareness can help surgeons handle tissue more gently and with greater control. The da Vinci 5 also delivers highly detailed 3D imaging with improved clarity and color, giving surgeons a clearer view of the surgical area. Together, these advancements allow surgeons to operate more precisely in delicate areas, helping them focus on the targeted area while minimizing impact on surrounding healthy tissue.

“The da Vinci 5 allows us, as surgeons, to perform complex general surgery procedures with unmatched precision and control, using only a few small incisions,” said Dr. Alain Elian, a surgeon at Beacon Kalamazoo. “For patients, this means less pain, a lower risk of complications and a much faster return to normal activities. This technology reflects our commitment to providing the safest, most advanced surgical care available.”

View procedures remotely

The system includes telepresence technology, which allows others to observe procedures remotely and see exactly what the surgeon sees in real time from virtually anywhere in the world. This capability supports communication and collaboration during surgery, allowing additional expertise to be brought into the operating room when needed. Beacon Kalamazoo is the only hospital in the Kalamazoo region utilizing this groundbreaking telepresence technology.

Funded by local donors

This new da Vinci 5 surgical system was purchased entirely with local donor funds, comprised of prior charitable contributions made by donors within the Kalamazoo community. “This investment is a direct result of the generosity of local donors who chose to support care in their own community,” said Carl Risk, Beacon Kalamazoo President. “By thoughtfully stewarding legacy Borgess Foundation funds, we are able to reinvest those gifts in meaningful ways today—like bringing advanced technology to our patients. It’s a powerful example of how past generosity continues to improve care and save lives right here at home.”
