Clinical Excellence

Investing in the people who are literally saving lives at a moment’s notice is incredibly important. Beacon associates and clinical teams prepare for tens of thousands of hours so they are ready when someone needs life-saving care. It’s no small task. It takes time, resources, and yes, money. From a practical standpoint, this means that Beacon Health System aims for a modest operating margin, about half that of many health systems. Earnings from any given year are used to reinvest in clinical talent and equipment for future life-saving care.

At Beacon, we strive to create safe systems of care that prevent any harm to patients. This includes using evidence-based practices proven to improve safety. We are also participating in national and statewide safety initiatives such as the national Hospital Improvement Innovation Network. Reporting is an important tool in our safety efforts. Reporting leads to learning, which leads to improved safety.

Accolades and Designations

Mayo Clinic Care Network

Beacon is the first organization in Indiana to be selected as a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a clinical collaboration between Mayo Clinic and independent health care organizations across the globe. Through this network, Beacon doctors have special access to Mayo Clinic knowledge, resources, team of specialists, second opinions and more.

Beacon physicians are able to consult directly with Mayo Clinic specialists on their patients’ behalf, at no extra cost, whenever the physicians feel it will benefit their patients’ care. They also have access to live video conferences that bring Beacon physicians together with a Mayo Clinic multidisciplinary panel and other doctors within the Mayo Clinic Care Network to review and discuss complex cases.

Beacon’s membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network  is truly a game changer. With this unique collaboration, the Beacon Cancer Care team has special access to Mayo Clinic’s world-renowned doctors, resources and expertise. Patients have some of the world’s greatest minds working together to provide the highest quality of care from our trusted local Beacon Cancer Care team, right here at home – close to family, friends and caregivers – all at no additional cost.

Mayo Clinic Care Network members have access to the following:

  • AskMayoExpert: An online resource that offers care guidelines, treatment recommendations and educational materials for a wide variety of medical conditions.
  • eConsults: Connects Beacon physicians with Mayo Clinic experts electronically when Beacon physicians want additional input regarding a patient’s care.
  • eTumor Boards: Live teleconferences allow Beacon physicians to participate in and discuss how to best manage complex cancer cases with teams of Mayo Clinic specialists.

Clinical Trials & Research

We are the only site in the area to offer oncology clinical trials to patients. We have access to national clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, Mayo Clinic and pharmaceutical studies would be important to the community.

During 2019, 43 research studies were completed or in-process with 140 participating patients. The top three studies in 2019 were:

  1. A pharmaceutical trial to determine if a new drug will help patients previously treated with a platinum-based regimen
  2. A study to see if breast cancer patients who participate in a weight loss program have a better overall response to treatment
  3. A tissue banking study through which cancer patients can donate unused tissue that is removed during surgery to be used for future research

Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency

As our healthcare system continues to evolve, there is no question that we will remain pivotal in addressing the health care needs of our country. We’re excited about the strong teaching experience we’re able to offer our residents, and the high-caliber students we’ve attracted to our program over the past several decades.

In 2018, Memorial Residency was recognized by the ACGME for fostering a respectful and supportive learning environment for its residents by receiving the Baldwin Award. Although we don’t strive to win awards in our everyday work, this reflects the support and partnership we have with Memorial Hospital and Beacon Health System and is illustrative of the exceptional experience our residents experience. With only two such awards given in the country annually, this confirms what we’ve known all along – we’re a place where you can thrive at work!

Recipient of the 2018 DeWitt C. Baldwin, Jr. Award

Our clinic space was expanded and modernized in 2016 to offer state of the art resources for our patients and providers.  Our benefits package is excellent, supporting our residents through their training years, while also providing technological support with a laptop and access to electronic medical resources.

With family medicine remaining at the core of our community’s healthcare model, South Bend continues to be an excellent location to train and practice as a family physician.  South Bend is a moderate- sized city which is family friendly, has plenty of local attractions with the added benefit of being in close proximity to Chicago and Indianapolis for those seeking a bigger city atmosphere.

There are many factors that make Memorial an amazing place to train, but above all else, the people, (our “Memorial Family”),  are what make us great, and we are extremely proud of our residents and alumni. Our residents are remarkable and this is further exemplified by one of our third year residents being awarded the AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education in 2019, an award annually bestowed upon 12 residents in the entire country.
