Physician and APC Wellness

Beacon Health System recognizes the importance of physician and APC wellbeing. The recent pandemic has both limited our ability to help physicians and APCs with wellness, and likely had significant negative impact on the wellness of many medical staff members. The Physician and APC Wellness page contains an inventory of resources currently available for physicians and APCs. This inventory will be updated as additional resources become available.

The Beacon Physician Wellness Council is launching several new programs and initiatives that are focused on wellbeing and on providing support to physicians and APCs to help reduce stress and burnout.

Electronic Health Record

The Electronic Health Record is a frequently cited source of stress and inefficiency for physicians and APCs. In many instances, a physician’s unawareness of existing functionality can make a big difference in the level of satisfaction with the EHR. Filling those gaps in EHR functionality knowledge is an excellent strategy to improve efficiency and confidence with this technology.

The Informatics Educator team is always looking for ways to improve our ability to help providers get more comfortable and efficient with the EHR tools available to us. Whether it’s a formal engagement for additional training or just the need for some efficiency tips and tricks, our educators are just a phone call away. We’ve also begun using Cerner’s Lights-On provider behavior analytics platform to proactively identify high-opportunity providers for a more in-depth, one-on-one series of interactions. The educator team is also developing content in the forms of quick videos and tips-and-tricks documents to help with self-guided, user-enhancement training. To learn more or request assistance, contact Suzanne Hemler at shemler@beaconhealthsystem.org.

Mentorship Program

This program will be provided to all new providers hired in the previous six months as well as existing providers who would like to voluntarily engage in mentoring to support specific needs. Mentees will be paired with experienced Beacon providers or leaders to help assimilate into their practice, organization and community, both professionally and personally. Mentors will ensure a transfer of experience, learnings, perspectives and understanding needed to enhance provider development.

Beacon will provide both mentors and mentees with resources to initiate mentoring relationships while providing both structure and flexibility to support individual needs. The desired outcome of this new program is to enhance the long-term happiness, engagement and success in the new provider’s career. To learn more about the program or how to participate contact Lars Kneller, MD at lkneller@beaconhealthsystem.org or Chad Hartzell at chartzell@beaconhealthsystem.org.

Peer Support Dinners

Sharing conversation and a meal fosters growth and understanding. For this reason, wellness committee will be organizing and sponsoring several groups of physicians, and groups of APCs, to meet for dinner on a regular but infrequent basis starting this summer. These groups are intended to be social with about seven or eight participants engaging in constructive conversation about personal provider wellness. There will be no agenda or formal presentation, only the opportunity to converse with colleagues and enjoy their fellowship as we strive to help each other be well. Takeaways from these dinners will be used to guide the future of our wellness program.

Regular participation, approximately every 2 months, will be vitally important for the success of the program. The number of participants will be limited in the initial rollout of this effort. If you are interested in participating, please email Mariellan Weaver at miweaver@beaconhealthsystem.org.

Physician-to-Physician Coaching (Physicians only)

The Physician-to-Physician (P2P) Coaching initiative will get you connected with your own, personal certified physician coach to work on any practice or life issue you find stressful. Each physician coach is a board-certified physician with extensive clinical experience as well as a certified executive coach with extensive experience coaching physicians. These are individuals independent of Beacon Health System who know what physician life is all about, and the toll that it can take on you, personally and professionally.

Dike Drummond, MD, CEO of WellMDWorks.com, and his team of coaches will provide this support service. Beacon Health System will cover the cost. All coaching conversations are completely confidential. Click  https://www.thehappymd.com/beaconp2p to inquire about, or start, your coaching engagement.
