Newbold Awarded Top Honor by Chamber

Phil NewboldCongratulations to Phil Newbold, CEO of Beacon Health System, on being named the W. Scott Miller Distinguished Business Leader by the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce during the 2015 Salute to Business on March 3! Christopher Murphy, III, Chairman and CEO of 1st Source Bank and a Beacon Health Ventures board member, presented Phil with the award.

The award honors an individual who has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, made significant contributions to the area business environment and has shown personal involvement and commitment to the community.

Phil’s Accomplishments

With a nearly unprecedented 28 years of experience as CEO of Memorial Hospital and now Beacon Health System, Phil has skillfully led the area’s only community-owned health care system through a powerfully transformative time in the field of health care. As the leader of a 7,000+ employee organization, he provides invaluable insight, perspective and knowledge into the unique needs and concerns of our community.

During his tenure, Phil has spearheaded the organization’s national reputation for innovation, improved patient safety, enhanced patient and employee satisfaction, directed our community’s shift toward population health, and implemented one of the first hospital tithing programs in the nation. This tithing program has produced dozens of innovative health outreach programs, including a nationally recognized diabetes management program.

Phil’s signature accomplishment, the formation of Beacon Health System, an affiliation between Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital, allowed for the new $74 million Surgery Center expansion at Elkhart General Hospital; has helped the organization recognize significant cost savings through newly leveraged buying power; and expanded physician recruitment opportunities and specialty coverage.

Other notable accomplishments include the founding of: the Pfeil Innovation Center, assisting local businesses and nonprofit organizations to become more competitive and integrate innovation into their workplaces; Epworth Hospital, which provides much needed mental health services to our community; HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum, helping thousands of kids every year make healthy choices; and a planned $30 million expansion and modernization project of Memorial Children’s Hospital.

“With the national average tenure of just six years for a CEO, the sheer depth and breadth of Phil’s wisdom and profound understanding of health care is a truly remarkable asset to our community,” says John Hiler, Chairman of the Board of Beacon Health System. “Due to his leadership, I firmly believe that no organization is better prepared to succeed and thrive in this ever-changing world of health care.”
