About the presenters
Dr. Janel Charlton joined the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2012 and took the position of Senior Associate Director in 2017. Drawing on her experiences as a former Chief Resident in the program, she understands the importance of strong communication between the faculty and residents. She prioritizes developing personal and professional relationships with each resident and aiding in their learning and development.
Dr. Gerrit Seymour is a dedicated medical student currently continuing his education in South Bend. Originally from Kaysville, Utah, Gerrit developed a deep interest in global health and underserved populations through his two-year missionary service in Bulgaria and Turkey with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That passion led him back to Turkey, where he worked with The Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies, focusing on the Syrian Civil War and the resulting refugee crisis.
He later earned dual degrees in music and middle eastern studies from the University of Utah, where he also worked at the university’s political science institute. During that time, he met and married his wife, Kaitlyn. After she earned her degree, they relocated to Pennsylvania to begin Gerrit’s medical school journey.
