Elbow Care

Common elbow symptoms

Sports like tennis, golf and baseball involve arm movements that can wear on the tendons in your elbow. The same can happen at work. Jobs such as plumbing, painting, carpentry, and mechanics often involve repetitive movements. Orthopedic care teams also provide care for many other conditions, including osteoarthritis, bone fractures and arm weakness.

  • Localized pain (aching, sharp, or burning), often worse with movement or gripping
  • Tenderness at the inner or outer elbow
  • Swelling and possible redness or warmth
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion
  • Weakness in the forearm, wrist, or hand
  • Tingling or numbness (especially into the ring and little fingers)

Common elbow conditions we treat

  • Tennis elbow – an overuse injury affecting tendons on the outside of the elbow.
  • Golfer’s elbow – an overuse injury of tendons on the inside of the elbow.
  • Olecranon bursitis – inflammation of the fluid-filled bursa, located at the tip of the elbow.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome or ulnar neuropathy – occurs with nerve compression in the inner elbow causing numbness/tingling.
  • Tendonitis / tendinopathy – inflammation or degeneration of elbow tendons.
  • Elbow fractures – a break in one of the elbow bones; often occurs from a trauma.
  • Ligament injuries (sprains/tears including UCL injury) – damage to elbow ligaments; common in throwing sports.
  • Overuse injuries – broad category including repetitive stress conditions.
  • Arthritis (osteoarthritis or inflammatory types) – a degenerative or immune-mediated joint disease.
  • Radial tunnel syndrome – compression of the radial nerve causing pain similar to tennis elbow.
  • Growth plate injuries / Little League Elbow (in youth athletes) – stress injury to the elbow growth plate.
